Hi All: I am interested in LED lighting for reef tank and wanted to know if someone could send me in the right direction to learn about LED lighting and comparing in to say Metal Halide lighting. If I had a 250 watt MH what would a comparable LED lighting be for replacement. Thanks all!

Most manufacters will help you find the right leds that you will need. All you need to do is email them. Orphec leds was very helpfull when i purchased mine.

I have rapid led Dimmable onyx for sale. Great lights, 5 months old.

sarahatl, I had 3 tanks with MH and 1 with t5's before I switched to all leds over all for tanks (and refugium) 10 months ago. After an EcoTech Radion, and a couple of too cheap leds from ebay, I bought 6 fixtures for 4 tanks from EverGrow. They were quite helpful, but it helps a lot if you know about leds already. Then I switched out 3 of the EverGrow fixtures, their basic D120 with dimmers, for 3 OceanRevive Arctic S026 fixtures. They are a newer company, but I found them because they do US warranty work for EverGrow. I liked the EG D120's just fine, but the OR Arctic S026's are much better looking and after getting them, I found I liked them even more for a variety of other reasons. And they have a sponsor thread here on R2R where you can ask them questions.

If you are looking for low cost, well made fixtures with dimmers to replace your MH, I'd go with the OR Arctic S026 or the EG D120 or the Reef Breeders 'value fixture'.
If you are looking for a fixture with built-in controllers so you can do sunrise and sunset (I have these on my 2 display tanks) I'd use OceanRevive OR-IT2040 or Reef Breeders Photo16 (both made by EverGrow).

I have 2 of the OR-IT2080 fixtures over my 180g tank that had 4 250W MH and 160W of t5 before. I like the look of the tank better. I like that I can change the colors in the tank (more or less blue and white). I like the sunrise and sunset control (but I think the corals really couldn't care less). For me the biggest advantage is way, way, WAY less heat and lower cost. Remember, I have 4 tanks, 3 with MH, 2 chillers (both outside) and I live in SW Florida, so we already use a lot of A/C. My electric bills are down about $40/month on average from last summer! Between that and not buying replacement bulbs and the cost of all 6 of the led fixtures I bought will be recouped in 18-24 months!

Radion and AI Vega or Sol can replace a 250 W MH. With the advantage of having ultimate control over the different colors. Either of those fixtures have enough power to bleach what ever's in your tank. Look for a fixture with Cree LEDs as they are considered the best. I have a vertex illumina which is a good light, with crees, but very much lacking in customer support in the US, so I wouldn't recommend it at this time.
Be sure to start off low. LEDs are intense lighting. I cooked a few of my corals with mine not even at 60%.
There's mounting evidence that reds and UVs do help so if you can afford them it might be better, but I've seen some good tanks that don't have them so I can't say that they are a must have.

I just bought a coral pro light from Reef Radiance and very plaesed with it . I have a 3 year old 70 gallon reef tank that had 8 T-5 bulbs on it . The LEDs I purchased are so much better and I was paying 200.00 every 7 months in bulb replacement. The light cost less than the bulbs I was about to replace .

I am running LEDS on my 4 tanks could not be happier. I have built several fixtures. At this point the prices have come down on so many nice fixtures your better off buying one complete.

I went from 3x250mh to 1 vertex sr260 led fully controllable. Love em run the tank 14 hrs a day now instead of 9 for less money and no bulbs to replace.
