Meh.. IMO there are many reported issues with the build quality and qc on the Solaris units, old and new. If I were to get a standalone fixture, I'd probably spring for the ones from Aquaillumination.

Good to see you, evilc66. Your thread's gone quiet lately, hasn't it?

Hey there cparka! Yeah nothing really to report on that front (yet ;))

I have put about $300-$350 into that setup. Not too bad considering the cost of manufactured systems, but still hard to swallow when comparing against MH and T5 systems.

Would I do it again? YES!!!! LEDs give a huge amount of control over the light you emmit into the tank. There is also virtually no heat emmited directly into the tank. Out of the 4 tanks I own, this one has the most stable temperatures which is strange considering it's the smallest.

A lot of people have been up in arms over on RC claiming that while the heat may not be directed into the water, it is still released into ambient air, thus heating your tank up anyway. While the heat is released to the air. It is never going to have as big of an effect as putting 64W of heat into the water via IR, as opposed to the air (which is vastly greater in volume per household) which will only heat the tank slightly by conduction(?).

Not really sure why I got into that rant, but there you go.

i feel like heating the air becomes the problem of your central air or heating system in the house.. i doubt that the minimal heat affects the tank much at all

Thats my thinking. 64W of heat radiated into the air is nothing to an AC system. 64W of heat radiated directly into the tank is something else.

BeanAnimal over on RC gets so wound up over this fact and no one seems to be able to dissuade him. Whatever. I'm going to keep pushing the edge on the DIY LED front until someone tells me other wise. Anyone care to join me :)
