Hello,

I am somewhat new to the hobby. I bought a biocube 29g HQI off of craiglist 4-5 months ago. I was excited to get the tank. It wasn't cracked, looked to be in decent shape and the person claimed that the light worked. I got it home and found that the light did light up, however, the fan did not move because it got so hot that the fan became extremely brittle and was seized. I ordered a new fan and got it installed after having to modify the wiring because the wire was extremely brittle from the heat. After running the light for a few months, the current fan is starting to die. It seems like this fan is also starting to melt from the the heat. And given the power bill from the last few months i would like to upgrade to an LED fixture.

The tank is currently a FOWLR tank with 3 fish, live rock, and a CUC. I plan on keeping it as a FOWLR for a few more months to let it establish further and get used to keeping the parameters stable. I eventually will add coral to the system. I don't know what type for sure yet as i am still doing research on that. Right now i am leaning towards softies.

I had a friend that has been in the hobby for a few years recommend getting a Hydra, but after looking at the cost, i don't think i can afford those lights. I have looked at the Kessil, AI Prime, and the Radion XR15w Pro but am open to any suggestions that you guys have.

A cheaper end light that does a great job would be the Current Orbit Marine LED! Took a little DIY to fit it to the hood of my 29 gal biocube but fits in there perfectly does a great job is fairly cheap and grows all my corals very well!

I guess it comes down to how much you want to spend, all of the ones you have mentioned are excellent for softies. Also, you could get lucky and score a nice slightly used on the trade forums. I just recently sold mine 5 months old Kessil 360 with mount and controller for almost half the price of brand new.

I changed my BC29 HQI to an Evergrow IT2040 full spectrum LED. I made a bracket for the back of the stand and hung the light from a slightly modified desktop monitor mount. The hanging wires in the 2nd pic were just holding it on until I got the proper nuts.
