same here. i was following as i use halides still and thinking of switching over to LEDs.

+1 this is a great experiment. I have never personaly owned metal halides only t5's and leds. I am recently converting everything to led, but I would like compare the mh to leds.

I think in spectrum the comparison is probably the same, but to me using a chiller far out weighs the ridiculous cost of LED's. Plus, i like the look of halides better in my opinion and it's not an evolving technology.

I was in there last month and their display was just about completely empty except for a few lps colonies.

whaa? wow, wonder what happened??? thanks for the info bro!

That's an awesome looking tank

This whole so called experiment is sketchy to me and Vivids lack of response makes me think they are hiding something. People have been to the store and witnessed the empty tank. Vivid why don't you tell everyone what happened before people including myself start writing you off as a dishonest vendor? If the corals were wiped out due to some disease who cares it doesn't mean people are not going to order from you. I have a Radion and I am finally getting good results after playing around with intensity and color channels but, is has taken 8 months of looking at washed out sps. I would not be surprised if the MH side looked better after 6 months. You say on facebook you are not in cahoots with Ecotech so prove it and let people know what happened!

If you look at their video posted on fb on nov 14 they still have their display tank up and running still lit by half mh and led. If they post something about the radion causing the tank crash with out proof just a hunch prob would cause them to lose them as a store to sell radions or vortechs

I have been to vivid aquariums numerous of times they go above and beyond in helping me with coral selection and shipping what i bought from cali to texas to insure they make it alive and to imply they are a sketchy lfs is pretty **** poor.

I don't know the sordid details but first of all, Vivid is not sketchy. In my opinion one of the finest sps stores in the country. They have an absolutely huge selection of colored up frags and colonies. It was relayed to me by their sales guys that it was a dosing problem, probably a vodka experiment gone awry. Nothing to get anyone all worried about some conspiracy theory. Most tank problems are apparent and most are just reefer (human) error. Even experienced people can make beginner mistakes. Both "sides" of the tank look equally bad and hard to imagine the lighting played a role

I find it hard to believe that radions would make a whole tank crash. IMO

Maybe initially on a 100% could make corals bleach bc of the intensity. But after more than 6 months of running...... I think it sounds like something else. Just saying.

Yes, the 800 gallon tank mysteriously crashed. We've been trying to figure it out. The problem is we still don't know the cause which is why we haven't said anything. Whatever the issue, it was contained only in the 800 tank. But 100% has nothing to do with lights because corals on both sides were affected in the same way. However, test corals show tank is on the mend and we're slowly bringing it back to life. This experiment has been a huge investment for us and there is nothing shady going on.

If anyone's in the market for LEDs, we totally recommend Radions. Are they better than MH? We don't have an answer yet.

Poisoned maybe? There's been 2 cases like that here in Dallas.

Thats the exact reason why I don't open my shop to anyone. It's a shame that people actually do things like that but I have heard of MANY stores that this has happened to in the past. Hopefully thats not the case with Vivid. Sad...

I mean no disrespect here but....Lol! Radions causing a tank crash? Sketchy experiment? Lol conspiracy theorists I take it! All jokes aside I think this was an excellent experiment and sorry to hear it went south. I only hope that you can figure out what caused this problem and that someone else also runs this test to prove that LEDs are equal in performance to halides and people can resign from the debating society. I agree that many LEDs are questionable (no name Chinese knock offs, bridgelux, evolutions, and various others) but the quality fixtures limited to only maxpect and radions IMHO are definitely proven to be very effective and equivalent to halides. Good luck vivid and hope you guys figure out the cause of this catastrophe.

Sad to hear what happened and my hat goes off to you guys and to a speedy recovery. From a store to another.

Hi all.
First I want to apologize for not checking this thread often enough- sorry!!
The 800g display tank is returning to its former glory. Both sides. Coloration under metal halides and LEDs is excellent- no question about that. So is growth and polyp extension. I was in the store last weekend and shot a quick pan back and forth of the whole tank- will post that soon so you can see how it looks now.

Should be interesting to see what the acro colonies do as they get bigger.. Looks very nice right now... What reflectors are used on the halides?
