42 1w or 24 3w
what is better for a 40gallon breeder? with bubble tip anemone?

my unexperienced guess would be to go with the 3w led's. im pretty sure that anemone like alot of light and 24 of them should be more then sufficient IMO. i was told to use 110 3w led's to replace my metal halides on my 220g to give u a comparison. i hope that someone with more experience could give you a better answer but that is my 2 cents.

ya i would say that would be a good number of leds then thanks

you will want at least 36-48 cree 3 watt leds, you should not need any optics in a tank that shallow. IME 36 3 watt crees will cover a 24" cube on an 18" heat sink, 48 will cover a 36"x24"x24" area, on a 24" heat sink

You don't need optics, but I would use them so that you lose less lights to the sides and can get the PAR without needing as many LED's. IMO, 24 3-watt Cree LED's will be fine for a 40 gallon breeder using 80 degree optics. I have 36 over my 65 gallon tank and it's plenty for SPS, clams, anemone, etc.
