Hey all...

I am upgrading to a 180 right now...and I really want to use the sand from TBS. I have several leopard wrasses that burrow...and before I purchase, I'm trying to make sure that this substrate will work.

Here is a picture...

This is sand taken straight from the ocean floor. I'm not posting this to get feedback on whether or not the substrate is good to use or whether it's beneficial. I'm just wondering if it will work for my leopards. I know people say that cc is not good for them...this looks like it could be somewhere in the middle of that and sugar sand.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks,
Scotty

Well I've always heard they need a smoother substrate and when you use cc they can get scratched up or cut and it could lead to infection.

It's boarderline for me; I would opt to use something finer. The reason stated above is correct.

I have used the sand before on tanks with wrasses. I had a Christmas wrasse for ten years that loved sleeping in the sand. My daughter when she was little would wait at the tank in the morning to see where he was pop out. If you want you could mix with a finer sand.

Thanks for the comments guys...

What are your thoughts if I did a quick sift to remove the larger particles and put that larger stuff in the refugium? Maybe even mixed in some dry special grade or reef flakes?

I love my leopards and they are important to me...part of the reason I'm upgrading...so I can get more! That's why I'm putting it out there, to see if anyone's had experience with this before. Right now I have sugar sand...and it's really a pain!

You can remove large pieces with a coarse screen or egg crate.
Alway keep a good cover on a wrasse tank fished mine out of the back filter way too many times. :)
