Let it FLOW! I need your input on some water moving pumps!

Hey fam!

I just reaquascaped my 8ft by 3ft wide by 2ft deep reef tank and I need to get some good flow everywhere. The aquascape was originally wide open so I didn't need as much but now it's more full and random! Currently I have the following running on the tank:

(4) MP40
(2) Neptune WAV

I was thinking a combination of pumps!

Thoughts on MP60's, and GYRE pumps?

2 Gyres. 1 mounted on each side and 2, WAVs mounted to the back wall, splitting the mid way point?

Just my newbie reefer opinion.

I had MP60's on my old 7' tank. They are monsters! Get one for each side and stick your 40's on the back wall.
I had Gyre's and wasn't a fan due to all the small parts and pain to clean and flow went down over time.
Was first gen though so maybe thats different now.

SPS 2 - mp60
2 - MP40

MIXED 4 - MP40

OR save some money and run the Coralbox qp-16 Nice pumps and quite too.

I would suggest depending on the budget, two gyre 280's on the 3 ft ends about 4' down in the middle use the current mp 40s in the middle of the tank 2/3 down to pull the water down when the water collides in the middle to circulate the aerated water down to the lower part of the tank.

My tank is a bit smaller than your’s, but i think 2-3 tunze nano stream 3’s will rock that water without any problems. Perhaps if going with 3 u’ll have to turn them down to 70-80% rather than going full throttle.

I’ve had them for a year now and they have to be the best pumps for large tanks both by efficiency and the ability to get behind every rock

I ordered to Gyre 280's to go along with what I have. Probably add a couple MP60's as well.

I was running 2 Tunze 6105 and one MP60 abd one MP40 took out the Tunzes and added 2 gyres 280 one on each side. Vortechs still on left side. The flow on the gyres is amazing. 280 is overrated but I prefer to run it dialled down and tune it up when corals grow more and I need more flow.

Take a look at the Tunze Stream 3's. Significant output and a 5 year warranty. Placement can be tricky though, so you'll need to determine if they'll fit what you're trying to do.

My tank is of similar dimension (just 6" taller). MP40s don't cut it on a tank of that size. I use one MP60 on each end and a pair of MP40 on the back wall. Also have a pair of WAV pumps mounted to the overflow (they won't stick to the 1 1/8" thick back panel).

AquaMedic EcoDrift 20.X move a ton of water. They are inbetween the cheap/unreliable Chinese Knockoff stuff and the Tunze/Ecotech. I have had some for almost three years - although they have been fine, they are nowhere near old enough to tell if they are reliable like my Tunze are.

I have a 14x4x3 foot tank coming in and flow is going to be a huge issue for me as well - this is where CLs with Eductors can really dwarf flow pumps. I am thinking about a pair of Mag 12s on a SeaSwirl if they will handle the weight. The flow from a pump like this is amazing and will send water across 8 feet like nothing.

This is what I'd suggest too
