So I finally got my Chinese black box LEDs set up on my 125g this past weekend. Prior to this, I was just using an old Fluval Sky strip I had. Wasn't really enough light for the tank size, but I just had it on there for viewing purposes and to promote day/night cycles for the fish temporarily.
Well, within a few hours of the new lights being on, one of my Azure damsels starts going bezerk. He begins to charge all of the fish in the tank in turn, a behavior I only ever witnessed briefly whenever I would add new fish. I figured the disputes would resolve themselves as before, but some hours later, I find one of the other Azures hanging out at the surface with shredded fins. I proceeded to mess with the rock work in the hopes of adding a distraction/changing up territories, but to no avail. Finally, I switched the lights off a bit early which had the intended effect of everyone retreating to their "beds" for the night. I was hopeful that after some rest and breakfast, things would calm down, but as soon as the lights went on this morning, the bully was back at his victim.
I've removed the injured Azure and I'm sure he'll recoup, but I did notice the fish appear much more brilliant under the new LEDs. Is this what is driving my dominant damsel so crazy? Is he simply viewing his tankmates as more of a threat now? Prior to this, they had been living in relative peace for five months.
