Lethargic small Sailfin

Good advice from NC. Not sure about whether mexican caulerpa goes sexual or not, but it can still be incredibly invasive (main reason it's illegal in CA...). If you can't keep chaeto, which is the best other option, why not gracilaria and lettuce algae? Some varieties of gracilaria are lightly calcified, but if you get the kind that is not, you can feed any extra to your tangs as a healthy treat! :)

Ich and other parasites and pests are a big reason why some reefers will only use clean dry rock. Much more control over which critters you import, and there's no curing necessary if it's nice and clean like the BRS dry options. I wish I had only used dry rock. I would not be fighting aiptasia now.

You've got a tricky situation there with the ich. If it's a fowlr (scuse me there...I don't recall reading it), you could remove the rock and sand (move it to qt or use an acid wash, dry it out, and reseed with a nitrifier product - I heartily recommend Dr. Tim's One and Only - after treatment) and medicate in the DT. Seachem Cupramine is perfect for the application.

Sorry to hear it passed.

this is true and agree with you, until you get Ich in your tank with the rock....a main reason why I advocate QT QT QT at least 6-8 wks BEFORE you add them to the main tank.

However, the reality is a majority of hobbyists do NOT QT.

Hard lesson learned. Everyone is eating so for now they are going to stay in the DT-catching everyone is pointless as I have no QT large enough

Kirk (NC2WA) ^above^ a nearby and close friend is all to familiar with not treating/medicating fish in QT before going into his 375g DT and learned the hard way in a big way. I have helped him catch fish and place into medicated QT's for a Fallow period. Its heartfelt offers of advice given above and a shame that there is not more emphasis on proper QT procedures in this hobby. I took a calculated risk when setting up my current 125g mixing properly QT'd Hawaiian fish with existing fish that had showed signs of Marine Ich previously, lost four fish and had to nearly break down the new system to catch all fish and place back into a QT to medicate for a second time while DT went Fallow for nine weeks. After almost 32 years of Reefkeeping should have known better. So I to cannot over emphasize the need to QT QT QT before any Fish or Coral goes into ones DT. Best of luck in treating of your fish and suggest you pick up some additional CUC (hermits & snails) for Display while running Fallow.

Cheers, Todd

I really appreciate it. Wish I had started off right but that's what I get. NO clue how I'm going to catch the sleeper Goby...darts in a hole if there's any movement outside the tank.

Any advice for proper QT size for these fish??

Gaskin,

Well, do I what I did...roll up your sleeves or in my case take off your shirt and go diving..:)

I removed half of my live rock so I could get a net in my tank to catch all my fish..this was a goby and a wrasse..**** those buggers are fast.

As my good friend Todd (TJ Reef) said, I went thru this on my 375g tank...not a pleasant event and lesson was learned the hard way...I lost 11 of 18 fish in a matter of days..most of them were large angels..

Now, I QT EVERYTHING (fish, coral, live rock (yes live rock) if it is wet then it can potentail carry parasites) even if it comes from a reputable store..For example..a majority of my fish come from the Divers Den section of Live Aquaria..they QT their fish a minimum of 2 wks and treat with copper for 2 wks as well as de-worm/fluke using praziquentel on the food...However, I still place these fish in a QT tank for a minimum of 2-6 wks before they enter my display tank...Once they are eating well and do not show any signs of parasites, they and only then will they be placed in the main display.

if you just have a goby then a 20L should be sufficient...however the rule of thumb is for every inch of fish, use 5-7 gallons of water.

too bad you are not local, I have a 30g tank I could give you a good deal on. :)

Oh no...it's not just a goby... The goby will be the trickiest! By that calculation I will need 65+ gallons ... That sounds like a NIGHTMARE.

What fish do you have?

to put in perspective..I have 3 QT tanks...2 55 gallons and 1 75 gallon

I posted it in this thread somewhere-let me find it:

"AWESOME info! Thank you SO much!

All I have for QT is a 10 gallon... That said-I have way more fish than a 10 gallon can hold. What size would you recommend for:
Blue Hippo Tang 1.5"
Flame Hawkfish 2"
Niger Trigger 2"
Clownfish (2) 1.5"
Blue Damsel (2) 1.5"
Three Stripe Damsel 1"
Yellow Sleeper Goby 3"
Snowflake Eel 7"

The damsels I can probably easily re-home"

Hi gaskin, I did a 65 gal Qt on the cheap. I found a local club member who had a 65 acrylic sitting in his garage. It was a little scratched up and had been in a fight with a router, top started to be cut out, but for what I needed it for it worked out perfectly, I got it for $10. I had a canister filter sitting around from when I started the hobby and a heater. I used two nightstands from the Goodwill for a stand, $10. Add a few peices of pvc, elbows and tees work well, and add some filter media that had been in the sump of display to the canister. Get a seachem ammonia badge, they stick to the inside via suction cup. Have large amounts of premixed saltwater for emergency water changes. I had to almost completely teardown my 90 gal reef to catch all my fish. Wrasses are really fast and elusive if they dont want to be caught. All this was necessitated by not having and sticking to an established and comprehensive quarantine protocal. I put my reef back together and left it fallow for 11 weeks. Treated the fish in the qt with copper for 6 weeks. I have since had no signs of any parasites and everybody is healthy and happy. Good luck with this. I know its a PITA but its a lesson that you will not soon forget and one that will make this hobby more enjoyable in the long run.
