But we're talking about the pitfalls of using glass cleaner directly on the glass. Yes, there are many alternatives. But my goal is a definitive "yes" or "no" where applying glass cleaner directly to glass is concerned.

Can it seep into the glass NO!

Can it be bad sprayed into tank YES!

I’ve heard don’t directly spray the glass due to overspray in the water. I spray a paper towel and go from there. When I worked at an LFS we sprayed the glass directly all the time and never had any known issues

1 part vinegar, 1 part water. Pour into a spray bottle and that’s the cheapest glass cleaner you can get.

I've always used windex, still do.

I used to spray it on the glass, one day some extra spray over got into the tank(I could see it on the water). A few minutes later most of my sps started to RTN. A large water change, and fresh carbon stopped the event. Everything eventually recovered, but I could actually see the skin sloughing off the bone it happened so fast.

I could only contribute the event to the windex. I probably would have not know had I not seen it actually get in the tank.

I still use it, but spray it on a paper towel, away from the tank.

Have you ever smell the mouth of a dog ???
Exactly that is why windex is the best. Smells better anyway :D
Hey speak for your own dog. Our dogs get their teeth brushed every morning. They're always minty/peanut buttery fresh.;)

(They're therapy dogs. Can't be offending residents.)

Before somebody comes up with me being dogophobic I apologise for the dogs might been offended:)
I no longer have a dog but I newer thought of brushing the teeth of the dog. I am under the impression the dog-breathe is not due to mouth hygiene but anatomy of the stomach. Could be wrong.

I mean in all reality it’s a silly question/ forum…. Glass can’t be penetrated by x, should I use x around my tank, even though x is bad for my tank…. Idk how much do you care about your tank vs liking x….I do all sorts of dumb $h1t around my tank, or in near proximity, or after participating in another hobby that involves heavy chemicals, but I wouldny say do as I do and you can be lucky too.
Yes you can spray windex on glass,
No you can’t put windex in tanks,
there may be adverse effects‍♂️

I have glass doors and mirrors very close to my aquarium, they get cleaned a day before we have friends/family around
Windex or vinegar works great, you need 2 cloths/ towels, one to spray onto and wipe, 2nd to clear/polish off glass (one wet one dry)

Most of the stuff on the glass for me is saltwater oversplash. Is windex best at cleaning off salt, I doubt it. Wet rag then squeegee.
Shine a flashlight at night at an angle on the glass to check for salt haze or film.

For as far back as I can remember, I've always heard that you shouldn't use Windex or other glass cleaners directly on the tank glass. I've always ignored this advice and have been using glass cleaners on all of my tanks for years without detriment.

Glass is a non-porous material. If it weren't, then it wouldn't hold water. So if glass can prevent water from coming out of the tank, why should we be concerned with glass cleaner getting in?

I understand that there is the possibility of getting spray in through the top of the tank or perhaps even the sump. But the mist that might get into the tank is so small, even into a 10 gallon tank, it would be so diluted that it would be rendered harmless.

Is it harmful to us glass cleaner directly on the tank glass?

Let's discuss.
LOL ... it is so funny how so much gets lost in translation over the years.

You are not supposed to use Windex (ammonia based cleaner) on ACRYLIC tanks. You are supposed to use Vinegar instead.

Telephone confirmed myth busted.
