Who am I kidding! No ones got DSBs anymore, myself included. If you are asking yourself whats a DSB? Don't feel left out. it stands for Deep Sand Bed and it was a "thing" we used to do to help control nitrates among other things. I was feeling nostalgic looking over some older pics for my IG and just had to show these off.

Was an old 90 gallon display I had that I converted to a remote fuge/dsb once I upgraded tanks. 8-9 inches of a couple different sized grains of aragonite and a massive chaeto ball grown under power compacts!

sooooooooo, let's have it. Anyone running a legit DSB out there. in tank or remote? let's see it.

I formerly ran a DSB/Fuge... it lasted ages, before I realized the harm it was doing to my system.

It's an amazing concept if you can keep the kind of life that constantly burrows. I just couldn't keep the effective stuff alive long enough, and mangroves require constant attention if you want them to thrive.

DID SOMEONE SAY DSB???

Battle-what’s? Las-where? Hilarious! These are obviously nothing but deranged balderdash.

Battle Bots. The fighting robots. It's a cool show. They call the arena the BattleBox.

Lol oh I do know. My son and I got way into it a while back. The witchdoctor/tombstone era.

When I was looking to buy my first battlebox I tried to find videos posted on YouTube to see what people got and all of the battlboxes I could find people opening were full of survival gear. Turns out it’s also the name of a subscription service to a mystery survival box.

Ok and now sorta back on topic, thanks to having a few engineer gobies my sand bed is really deep in spots, then it other spots my refugium light under the tank shines through. I have completely given up on trying to keep a level sandbed.

The survival box company is missing the e in battle if it makes any difference, I have absolutely no clue if it does though.

it definitely does in fact . The process for my name and logo was surprisingly thorough. which I do get. but I suppose my first step would be to see if its already taken. lol. which I have not done yet.

It would appear there are several trademarks for Battlebox, each within a different 'classification' If you sold toys or robots, Battle Bots would likely say you infringed on their IP.

Of course, live corals are not toys... nor robots, so your own filing should specify this, and historic usage pre-dating their trade name.

Good insight of course being the king of procrastination that I am, I have not looked into this yet. lol but I think I may explore just for fun. you are definitely correct there. As far as classifications go

edit. took about 3 seconds. lol. battlebots has a few for sure clearly there is room for another niche variant lol

but while I'm at it coming back full circle to the general thrust of this post, part of me wants to set up a little scrub display tank with a massive 5-7" deep sand bed. Throw some of my favorite pieces in there and see how they do no other filtration maybe a plenum or something.

It actually kind of parallels my other thread about detritus

You know one thing about deep sand that is that they really acted well as a means for particulate and detritus to kind of settle and if anything become inert overtime within the sand bed. I don't know if that's a good thing really or not but an interesting point nonetheless. Not to mention the breakdown of nitrates over time as well.

That's probably why as we saw more carbon dosing methods gaining popularity say 10-15 years ago now about the same time deep sand beds were becoming less and less of an appealing option. Not a coincidence I'd imagine.

But with Conches and Nassarius snails, sand sifters or sand sleepers stirring the bed there shouldn't be any buildup - at least not in significant levels that would cause any problems like anaerobic beds? While at the same time, anaerobic beds can allow anaerobic bacteria which can be beneficial, correct? Or are those the ones that can nuke your tank if not kept in check...

I’m honestly not sure. maybe someone can chime in on that but I do remember reading somewhere at some point something saying things sifting stars were kind of a no-no in that they would eat a lot of that fauna and what-not that inhabited the deep sand beds.

In fact, now that I think about it, there were a lot of really heated debates about deep sand beds back in the day. I mean I think they got a little nasty pretty often. I didn’t really pay as much attention as I probably should’ve back then though

It's currently lights out, so pardon the pic using a flashlight; but I run a remote DSB in my mangrove / display fuge:
