ok, there's a myriad of reefers here that build stuff, buy, install it, rip it apart, put it together, mix two into one, etc. I see a lot of DIY stuff with all sorts of ingenious ways of getting the desired output. I also see a lot of people talking about the same equipment, but sometimes wanting to do different things with it also. Well, what if we took our focus off of the "normal" equipment and focus on what else is out there that we could utilize.
I haven't found too many situations in much of anything that require one way to get the job done. So, my idea is to gather people in here and create a water station that is plumbed together and also does an automatic water change. Now, what I'm looking for here is thinking outside the box. If we all had money trees, we'd be rocking a Automatic Water Change Systems | Genesis Reef Systems system and call it a day. I don't have the money for that, but could this be done with stuff you can find at Ace, radio shack and menards, etc?
Before we get into equipment, what are our requirements? (I'm going to start a small list, feel free to add to it!)
-RO/DI holding tank
-NSW mix tank
-Pump from holding tank to NSW mix tank
-Plumbing, ball valves, Tees, etc
How do we get from the NSW to the tank and the old water from the tank to the drain/outside/neighbors rose bush (kidding!)? What if your water station is across the house in the mud room or downstairs in the basement or your tank is upstairs and your RO.DI is hooked up under the kitchen sink?
-Peristaltic pumps [seem to be the favorite, but is there anything else that could work?]
-Controller (is one needed?)
-Timer?
I say, let's go for it all! What could you do to further automate the NSW? What if you had a small auger fed system that delivered a measured amount of dry salt to your mixing bin? What would be the challenges? Well, moisture for one! what else?
So, anyone want to start? You don't have to come up with the complete idea. But if you have an idea about a certain aspect, let's hear it!!!
