Ive been seeing lots of beautiful encrusting montipora but I wonder how scapes look with them once the colonies are large. Most tanks that I see have various types but they are usually less than 5 inches in diameter. I have seen a couple of tanks that have them growing on overflows as well but none with large amounts of their rock scape being covered. So let's see them!

Here's one example. The Idaho Grape is about 12" x 14" and the red is about 6" x 6". Love me some caps!

I love monticaps as well. I don't really consider them encrusting though since they grow off of the rock structure. I'm interested in seeing the types that grow along the rocks or whatever they are on.

It's about a 5"x5"
It was 3 times as large

I don't know if it counts but I have this blue/purple stylo and blue ridge coral that are growing out. Not sure if they count as encrusting. (And I know the blue ridge is technically a softie but I consider it SPS-ish

That blue Ridge doesn't look like any I've seen haha. It kinda looks glossy but it may be the picture

I won't have them anymore unless they are isolated in their own rock or just sitting on the sand bed.
This superman monti (dead center) just kept encrusting down the rock and it would kill anything it came in contact with.

This is what I was looking for. I guess isolated rocks would definitely be the best way to go. I always see encrusting corals for sale but rarely see large colonies, i guess the overgrowth may be why haha. Beautiful tank by the way!

It forms this coating every so often that I then blow off with a turkey baster, almost like an odd slime coat. It does put out polyps, just a bad photo of it

Here's a pic of a very large encrusting colony. One of the guys I follow on Instagram has it and the way he gets frags of it is from a smaller piece that use to be attached. This one here just grows and stays in the tank.
