What's the history of this very sought after clown? What characteristics set them apart from the rest? Who's got them here? Pics and vids welcome. Also, please tell us about your Onyx.. lineage, how old they are when you got them and now, if they're being hosted by a coral or nem, etc... :)

here's a quick video of my breeding c-quest onyx pair, relatively about 2 yrs old as female is huge, this female lays massive nests every 9 days , she lays about 1000+ fry , bought this pair a while back thanks to my buddy chad, they are great and excellent spawners for me..no host only a clay pot as they are a part of my breeding program...enjoy the video!!!

wOw! I guess only two people like these fish. I thought they were more popular. :hammer:

I love Onyx, they were my first fish love back before they were called 'onyx'.

History as I remember it - When we got clowns from the wholesaler the PNG clowns usually had more black and we would find a few with black connecting all three bars pretty regularly. This was back in '99-02 I believe and anything with all three bars connected with back were 'onyx'. Then a shift happened (or they were getting labeled wrong IDK) and SI clowns were showing up with more black than the PNG clowns. Then came C-quest and Rods (c-quest) onxy that re-defined the term and standards. The clowns C-quest offspring had such rich colors and retained it in their offspring. I've known a few people who have amazing looking wild caught onyx and the offspring do not have the same dominate black coloring.

... but I think anyone who loves Onxy already knows this history :)

I have had MANY onyx over the years, WC PNG & SI, Rods, and now JCA c-quest line. I bet they are still burried online somewhere, I'll try to find some pics. I can honestly say out of all of them, the JCA c-quest I have now is the most stunning.

I'll snap some new pics of her this week. She is paired with a Picasso male, they do not host anything but have started hanging out around the frogspawn 24/7 just this weekend. I've only just received them in sept.

Thank you. I've just been recently looking for more info about the Onyx line. it's good to know the background of such nice looking clowns. I've always like Picasso's so I didn't care too much about any of the other "Perc" line. but seeing some at LFS made me think otherwise. I think their Onyx came from SA which mean most likely they are in lineage to C-Quest. is that about right? because the Onyx are truly amazing to see in person, esp when the body has already turned black.

SA does sell onyx that are c-quest linage , nice ones at that.. in my opinion c-quest mastered the onyx gene and made them very black... lots of c-quest onyx have all black bellies and fins, they look spectacular in person!!

I take it that the farther down the "Onyx gene" goes, the blacker they get. I'm not really sure when the "Onyx" term got introduced but my guess is many generations of Onyx has been produced throughout the years. Am I somewhat correct?
