LFS Woes

I'm pretty new to the hobby (saltwater), but I've researched online extensively about specific topics.

In my area there are 3 LFS "near" me, and another a bit further away.

Usually the main guys/girls - and possibly owners - have some good knowledge.

But the regulars working there are just quarries of bad advice - and what's worse is that they tend to speak it with such confidence.

Is this universal, or just my location?

The Dunning Kruger effect is pretty common in LFS (and in aquariums in general).

I know that some LFS patrons will only shop with the favorite employees.

Another option is to do your own research and only rely on the LFS to ring up the sale (grin).

Universal and I've been in the hobby more than 30 years, can you imagine how horrifying it was before the internet.

That is par for the course, unfortunately. Your best bet is to come here for advice and take your LFS advice with a grain a salt until they prove they can be a trusted source of info.

Exactly. That is why I like it here. It can take A LOT of time, but if you are patient and attentive, you can really figure out who you want to ask for advice on any given topic. Fish disease? Chemistry? Lighting? APEX? SPS? Nobody can be an expert at all of it. But there are plenty of subject experts kicking around here and willing to help.
