LFS's salinity @ 1.035...

Just picked up some red-legged hermits at my LFS...tested their water at home on refractometer...1.035...I called and she said "we keep our reef tank high"...am I right or is she clueless...is this safe?...:rolleyes:

Is that maybe parts per thousand you are reading? Because 35PPT is 1.026 specific gravity.
 
I tested some LFS water before, it read 1.027 with a milwaukee meter. That is the highest i've seen. 1.035 doesn't seem right.

Yes and no. Some areas of the ocean see salinity swings naturally. I would say they might have raised the salinity to fight off certain disease or to replenish lost minerals and nutrients. Prolonged exposure seems bad, but if it was temporary, could be ok.

No...they're not that sophisticated...the young lady who does "fish"...always seems to think that she knows what she is doing...its permanent, and there are no fish in there...well actually that is where they keep the little sea horses with corals and such...I'm gradually bringing the salinity down to my tank's level...getting close...Thanks...:rolleyes:
 
That seems really high but tbh I don't know enough about the science to comment with any certainty. 035SG seems crazy to me!

How do the hermits look once you get them in your tank?
 
It is quite high. Many organisms do well in the Red Sea where the salinity is quite high, but I don't recommend keeping a tank that high. Most of the open ocean is at a sg of about 1.025 to 1.028. :)

Not much movement yet...they're night critters...so we will see...:confused:

I know...last time I'll buy inverts from this place...the fish have been OK because I don't let them anywhere near their tank...from wholesaler to me...stays in the bag...
 
The gulf of adan can reach 41ppt. But thats very high. I doubt much will survive long with that salinity.

Way to high! I assume your using a calibrated refractor or digital salinity tester for those results? Be sure to check the ph as well.

My LFS lady is the kind of person who has a modicum of success so she believes she can do this stuff by instinct...also it seems that she is busy and doesn't make time for essential maintenance...but does make time for excuses...How can the mini seahorses live at that sg.?:rolleyes:
