These days it seems like people are successful with all kinds of rock & sand amounts - minimalist rockscapes with bare bottoms all the way to DSB and a big ol' pile'o'rocks. I'd say if you want to go for a minimalist look in the tank, just be sure you have some extra in the filtration somewhere. Rubble or Matrix or MarinePure, etc.
