I have a 27 gallon cube which I believe is between 18 to 20 inches deep probably less with my sand bed. My question is if I only plan to put soft corals in my tank will a cheap light like an aqua knight work?

Currently I have a aquaneat that came with the tank which I'm sure isn't even made for saltwater since it is mainly white lights, using it just to see the tank while it's cycling.

As an additional note, cats may at some point jump of the tank, it does have a lid, so I'm not sure if a bar light will be better or a clamp on (I have like 12 ft ceilings so hanging isn't an option).

The older Reef Breeders Photon 16 (they still have a few) is the best value in a fixture with 6 channels of color and programmable timing over a 24 hour day. I've used them for years and still have 2 even older versions that work perfectly and I get 150 PAR at the sand in a 20" deep tank.

You can get less expensive fixtures, but they will have less control or less PAR ability.
