Curious if a Kessil A80 can fit in the hood of a fluval spec 13.5 or does the hood have to come off for it to work? I would take out the stock light first to try and fit the A80 in the hood. I want to keep the hood so I can control evaporation as well as to keep fish in the tank

I really don't think you're going to be able to get away with modifying the hood for the A80. It's going to be way too close to the water and look like there's a disco ball inside of your tank. I would get the arm and get a piece of plexiglass cut to the size of your tank. Also, if you can- save for an AI prime, it's worth it, trust me.

I've had an AI Prime and it was alright tbh, I want the A80 due to the shimmer, this is not a normal reef. In fact I do not plan on having any corals, just some macroalgae and maybe hardy sponges

Give this a try. 2 ReefBrite 15" LumiLite Actinics.
Best Fluval upgrade. These are at 60%. Get them from Champion Lighting.

You're funny. I'm not paying $260 for 2 LED strips, at that rate I could get an AI Prime and actually control the light

You should watch the BRS video where they put these to the test. You're definitely not going to find a better light for a Fluval Evo and still keep the hood.

No, the LumiLite standard version. I made the switch myself and haven't had any issue but its been 3 days.

Great way to keep the hood but you need a 2.75"x13.75" piece of lexan to protect lights.

Buy the light you want, if you want the Kessil shimmer why bother looking at other options, buy the light and you'll have to make it work, worse case you'll have to sort out a new lid.

Yeah, but getting a new lid takes away from the built in hood of the evo

Check out this thread on lights.

not having the Kessil takes away the Kessil shimmer. Wasn't that the point of this thread?

you didn't say the Fluval lid had to stay, that you just wanted a lid to save jumpers and evaporation.

Yes, that is also true. Would a single kessil be good enough for soft corals?

+1 on the AI Prime! It's great for the Evo. And I find that having the hood off increases the PH in a great way!
