I am getting a new tank that measures 39.4 x 22.44 x 19.7in. I already have a 8x24 ATI powermodule that measures 22.5 x 20.4in. Would this work? There would be a good chunky of space one both the left and right side of the tank (~8.5").

Or should I get a 4/6 bulb powermodule in the 36" length?

I think you will have some, probably not critical, but some light drop off at those 8" ends.

I'd try the one you have. If it's OK for you, great! If the light drop off is more than you are willing to tolerate (assuming there will some drop off) you can always get the bigger fixture.

I would get the 36 as soon as you can. Until then, the 24 will work fine and just concentrate on keeping the high-light stuff near the center under the light.

If you only plan on keeping stuff in the middle, then don't worry about lighting the outside 8 inches.

If going for max coverage left to right with the 36" unit, the question then is 4 or 6 or 8 bulbs? If the light were ceneters, the 4 bulb unit would give me 5.25" front and back, while the 6 bulb unit leaves me a 2.5 inch gap front and back, and the 8 bulb gives me near total tank coverage with only 1" gap front and back.

Trying to be efficient to minimize light spill but also provide enough light coverage. It is not like I will literally have sps growing into the glass.

Thoughs on how many bulbs?

6 is fine. If you were 24x24, then I would say 8.

So thats a no to the 4 bulbs that is 12" shorter than the tank? Thus will be a mixed reef but so.ewhat sps dominated.
