Sorry to hijack this but I am looking to upgrade my kit supplied aqua one mini reef lights to something better but the price of the led lights is quite amazing so really want to buy the right ones. Trouble is there are so many conflicting views out there it makes it really hard to know what to do. What should you look for in a light to know that it will do what you want? My aqua one lights don’t seem to be growing the corals like I hear others saying they do but how would I know if in fact the aren’t or if I buy a new set if they will be any better? I feel drawn to the expensive ones because I think we’ll if they are expensive then they must tick all the boxes.Hello,
Well this is a loaded question and expect 9 billion answers. Personally I don’t like any of them but again that’s me. Maybe to get an idea of what you actually like is go to an aquarium or visit lfs if you have them. To be honest between the aquarium and lfs only one uses radions. Nobody uses hydras, kessill etc for the other two lfs and then you have petco which use god knows what and they are terrible.
There are soooo many new leds that work well and less expensive than those three it’s insane. I mean it’s not too far of a stretch where the Chinese black boxes are super similar to the new g5 radions. Yes they have less features but light wise they are darn close.
Another personal issue or choice is features. Me personally actually can not stand them, I don’t want them to make my breakfast. Just want them to be reliable and grow coral. My lights I don’t need internet or anything they ramp up and down and do the same thing every day.
Some love metal halides t5 take your pick. They mix them with leds etc. again the trend has been led with some T5 thrown in there. I love the leds I have they are amazing and I have chewed on the idea of adding T5 on mine. I just can’t find the right fixture that will work with my current lights and length of my tank.
But the most important take away from this is for you and you only to find a light you love. Every light is different on every tank. My lights work great on my tank, but may be a tragedy on another one. You must find one where you like the colors, features and price. This doesn’t have to cost you 3500 in lights, you can do it under gosh 1000 or less if you look around. What size of tank and what will be in it helps a lot.
