I'm looking to upgrading my marine reef tank lights. I currently have a Fluval Aquasky strip that are suitable for marine fish tanks only. I have a few corals that have a brown tinge as the lights are not adequate enough to enhance/pop their colours. I have a hood so would be open to any suggestions of reef lights that would fit in a hood. I'm prepared to dismantle the hood leaving the pelmet for effect, and fit one or two clip ons. I realise that these are quite expensive. I've been seaeching on the Amazon website l. My budget is £200. I'd welcome any suggestions. See attached image of my tank. Thanks

What size is the tank? It looks like a 15 gallon? I have an AI16 over my 15 gallon, but AI usually hangs about 8" from the water, a lot of lights hang at least 6" to 8" off the water, I don't know how much space is under your canopy.
I'll be dismantling the hood so they'll be just the pelmet. The lights I've been looking at are adjustable. The gap/space is around 10". My tank size is 3ft x 12 x 15 - Thanks for your reply

Ha ha ha.I do live in the UK. I'm also an English Language/Literature tutor so know the definition of the word 'emergency' - As I said earlier, I didnt realise that I'd pressed the emergency tab. Btw., I'm female not male.
I am unsure where in this I referred to gender of any kind? :)

Just came to think of it; unsure if it would suit your need but I am selling an almost brand new Kessil A160W for £100. It only covers 2x2 feet though, might be a wee bit too small for your need..

Thanks very much for the offer, but it would be too small. I'm not sure who it was, but the post said 'he as opposed to 'she' probably lives in the UK etc... Apologies, my response should have been posted to the author of the comment.

No it's a lot larger than a 15 gallon - The regal tang should be okay with 3 other fish, (2 clowns and a wreck fish(. I returned a scopus tang as it got too big. The regal tang its not a issue- Thanks for your concern though.
Regal can potentially grow to 12 inches.
Your tank is 36 inches by 12 inches foot print. When full grown, it will barley be able to turn around. It will be fine for a couple months. They do grow fast in the first year.
Think about planning to upgrading tanks now or rehoming the fish by mid October.
I just don't want to see you fail.

Thanks for your reply. I find tangs are very good clean up fish. I had a scopsi and yellow tangs in the past that grew big and I sold or returned them/swop overs, to a marine aquatics dealer. I have a good relationship with the marine/reef dealers where I get my live/dry stock from, they sold me the tang, so they will replace or reimburse me if he/she becomes too large Tangs usually take a while to grow in my tank. They have offered to replace the zoa coral if it doesn't colour up. I've ordered the new lights + remote timer etc., from Amazon, so we'll see if this works.

Sometime in the not so very near future I may be upgrading to a larger tank with a cabinet to store my filter etc., so will transfer the fish including tang. Thanks for your advice/concerns though.

Would love to know what light you ended up getting!

Rehoming, if done correctly, is definitely an acceptable practice IMO. I would not be able to do it personally, as I get too attached to them :P.

I don't think anybody here is trying to shame you or anything, myself included. Sometimes fish stores give very bad advice wrt tank size, and I just wanted to make sure you were aware that 28 gallons is not sufficient for that fish.

Regardless, welcome to Reef2Reef. I hope you will do a post with the new lights on! Will be great to see how they look.

oh, that will be challenge to get lights at the current budget. If you are not opposed to used light, lots of folks got into reefing during covid and now getting out, so you can always find lots of barely used equipment for sale online at good prices.

Otherwise, there are some non-brand lights on amazon, things like vicra and smatfarm, there are threads on this forum that give them good reviews. You can use the search function to get more info

Another option, are 2 AI16's, so start with one till the budget allows for the next one.

Like I said its a real challenge at that budget, so it will take some creative thinking, or else hold off a little longer till the budget increases. Lights are, by far, the most expensive component on our tanks, better to get the best right away IME

After receiving positive answers/feedback to my questions from Amazon customers who bought the same kit for their 3ft tank. I've ordered the Nicrew Aquarium LED Reef clip-on lights + remote control.

Thanks again. You and others have been very helpful. Looking forward to the future in my reefing hobby and interacting with you experts.

Thanks for your reply. I've just managed to purchase some clip-on lights + remote control that just hits my budget target.

Yes this exactly! 100% agreed!

R2R family I appreciate the passion for the community but we don’t have to scold anyone who’s still figuring things out. Please just report the mismanaged pre-fix and we will remove it. :) No problem! Thank you.

Welcome to R2R @Jaywat777!
