light upgrade?

In that price range I'd just get some Chinese black boxes off amazon. They will be more than fine for soft and lps, if you are still newer I'd stick to those 2 for a bit and then dabble in monti in birds nest as you gain expierence
What are Chinese black boxes? Sorry lol never heard of those before

Is it the viparspectra?
I know people have been giving you good info on lights but I’m currently running 3 maxspect etherals over my 6ft long 120 and love them, they grow everything. T-5 lights are a great all around proven light that will grow pretty much anything depending on how many bulbs. LED on the other hand is the newest and my favorite. If you go with t5 I would go with at least a 4 bulb fixture. But before you go and spend your hard earned money on lights I would check out bulk reef supply YouTube channel on lights. They have tons of videos on the different types of lights, what they do, choices and so on.

Thanks!!! Quick question maybe you can answer... if I happen to purchase one of those viparspectra would a 165w be suitable for a 90 gal tank?

I would go with 2 if I was you. 2 will lessen the shadow spots in your tank and will wrap light around all your corals and will Lessen the chance of coral die off from parts getting weak to no light. Bulk reef also have videos about par levels.

Personally I think you would like a 6 bulb t5ho fixture just because it’s easy for a new hobbyist to set up. Bulk reef supply has the sun blaze 6 bulb for 199 plus bulbs. I would go with 6 ati bulbs. The only reason why I say t5ho fixture over led is because led are controllable which is a good thing but also can be a pain to dial on. There’s been a lot of people including me who have burned and damaged there coral from having there led’s to bright. T5ho fixture are a basic power plug and power switch. Easy.

What about a 300 w? That should be big enough for whole tank without need long multiple lights right?

Sorry for some reason my response and what you said got mixed together. But what I was saying was sometimes it’s better to have multiple smaller units then just one big 1. Completely up to personal preference

You can get a 4 bulb 60 inch ati hybrid t5 fixture for under $500. That way you can put LEDs in them later if you need to do SPS or want more color pop.

I have three Kessil 360 WEs over my 90 gallon reefer. I probably only need two, but I got a deal on the third. Kessils are 'plug and play" LEDs, and you can adjust the Kelvin from 10,000k to 20,000k. I've used halides all my life, and LEDs are like magic to a 63 year-old aquarist. Whereas my old 250 watt halides were like cinderblocks, the Kessils are the size of drinking cups and about the same weight. Weird. And the LEDs put out more light. I like the Kessils because they are so dang simple to use, and I'm pretty simple myself. HOWEVER! I have not seen the rapid SPS growth with the LEDs as I did with the halides. I almost went with Viparspectra, and I know LFSs which use them to grow out frags. They are very good, just not as compact as Kessils.

I use Kessil a360w and it can grow anything and is an amazing light but make sure you get the controller

I’ll definitely be looking into those! I was looking at the viparspectra ones on amazon but haven’t made a choice yet
