Hello! I don't have a tank yet but plan to start slowly purchasing things. My plans are for a 60gal and I hope to have a Maxima clam in it eventually (a year down the line of the tank being matured maybe more) but I don't want to keep updating lights. I want to make one really good purchase and it last me AWHILE. So what are your LED lighting recommendations? I would like to keep it under $500 if possible

p.s Not a beginner but it's been awhile

What are the dimensions of the tank you are getting? If you're on a budget the first thing that comes to mind for me would be 2 Ocean Revive Arctic T247 LED lights. They retail at about $200 a piece and have a built in timer. I own a pair and they do grow coral and are well made. A few people in my local reef club own these as well and a couple of them own clams.

If you want more features like custom profiles with personalized spectrum, schedule and ramp times. I would suggest Aqua illumination 26 HD's, Kessil or of course the Ecotech Radions. Those are the top 3 LED brands on the market right now. Each have there own strengths and weaknesses.

Hope this helps!

Ty :) I haven't purchased the tank yet but I'm most likely going to go with a breeder for more Aqua scaping room.

You cannot go wrong with either a T5 retrokit or ATI T5 fixture. plus will be less expensive starting out. You can always add an LED bar to it as well. A lot of people are either switching back to T5 or supplementing T5 with LED these days. Not that LED cannot grow coral, but with LED you can tinker too much if you lack patience and cause more issues.

I would check out doing a combination of the color options for the OR series light strips from Orphek. Absolutely killer value.

60g... cube? Long? Going to make a huge difference in your choices.

For a 60 cube, 24x24", at $500, buy what you want. There's lots of LED's in that price range... you're only going to need one. I'd likely go Kessel A360 or AI Hydra 26.

For a 60 long, 48x12" footprint, going with one of the point source LED's means you'll need two of them. Makes your selection a bit harder to go LED and stay under $500. I'd probably suggest T5. A 36" SunPower 4x39w would be an excellent choice. The 36" ATI is a bit nicer, but costs more than your budget.

currently I'm using the lighting that came with my tank. it's a fowlr tank since I'm just starting out. in a few weeks I plan on purchasing a light from chewy that seems to catch my eye. here is the link.

If it's the Pro model then it's a decent light, but if it's just the standard then you will be disappointed as they aren't the best suited for growing corals.

@The OP as you can see there are lots of suggestions and variables here. It would definitely help to know the dimensions of the tank as that can be a complete game changer for your light setup. I run a pair of the AI Hydra 26HD lights over my 90 and they work well for what I want but it will cost well over $500 to get a pair of them and the mounts (about $700 for a pair plus the mounts). Here is what they look like:

For a 60 gallon our Photon 16-V2+ or 24-V2+ will do the job for $349.99/$374.99 respectively. Check out our Photon V2+ here: https://www.reefbreeders.com/photon-v2/

Hello,

One of the problems with this question is lol opinion and what lights are amazing and ones to run away from. Two extremely Important factors exist. The first being your budget, regardless of what some say of you only have 500 well then that’s the figure. This hobby doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to be fun. The second is, people can recommend lights forever, but you have to pick which one you like based on how it will make your tank look. It’s important to know that every light is going to look different based on the tank. All the corals will respond in different ways. What works great for some, may be a huge failure to others.

An example is, I use the current usa orbit marine pro 72 inches and my tank has done amazing. I would never switch them for any reason. Others have not had good luck with them. Some have amazing results with radions etc, I had horrible horrible luck with them. It also depends on what you find beautiful in your own mind. I highly suggest maybe visiting some lfs or aquariums and ask what they are running for lights if you like how it looks. Also keep in mind just because something looks amazing in their tank, may look like sage brush in yours under the same light. It
Could also be a total gem and gorgeous looking coral. There are so many variables it’s hard to pin point.

We can always say hey these lights rock, but will they rock for you. Well time will only tell and also depends on other factors.

I can say the current usa lights are really good and most people have great success with them. Yes there are some who have not, but this is the same story with every light out there. If you stay within your budget, and you get something that you like (that’s the most important) everyone here will do what it takes to make that light work for you. I wish you all the luck and we hope to see pics.

Sincerely
Sarah
