Hey guys it’s been about 5 months since I upgraded to a 40 breeder and started using the viparspectra 300w leds. I’m thinking I want to change over to two ai prime hd’s. The viparspectra just doesn’t have the customization I want and I think it’s making my corals sad because it’s just so bright even on the lowest settings. Would you guys say the 2 ai primes would be a good upgrade?
Thanks for any help

That seems to be the only downside to them, really.

I think it’s making my corals sad because it’s just so bright even on the lowest settings.

They are bright. Lots of people run them though. Do you have them hanging 15" or so from the top of the water? There are other parameters than light too, of course. What kind of corals?

No, it would not, besides for the customization, like ramping.

The AI primes, at max output including fans, are only 59 watts a piece. But, lots of people use and like AI Primes. Two should work pretty well for a 40 breeder, depending on what you're keeping.

My tank is mainly softies and lps all my parameters are in check I just assume it’s the light because under weaker lighting my corals were doing better. Also at night time everything is wide open and happy until the light turns on in the morning

viparspectra is just a glorified black box, and unfortunately I've never met one that didn't have a stupid color arrangement. I mod my black boxes with a functional color combo and channel arrangement. These lights need to be at least 75% blue with no more than half a dozen LEDs on the other channel being a mix of a white and a couple red. They have too many screwy and pointless colors that you have to turn down anyways unless you want a yellow light.

For LPS two AI primes should be fine on a 40b.

It's easy to cut the light on a black box. Easiest way is to pop it open and remove half or all of the lenses. Or, put a sheet of tissue paper or white landscape cloth under the shield.
