I have been researching various issues. I came across this mini winch for $70.
You might find this helpful.

That does seem like a good option and idea. I'd be nervous it would "give out" and drop my lights into the tank eventually, though.

there is no way that would give out tis a hoist for lifting . i have somthing like that on my hoist in the garage that lifts motors and frames but my hoist is rated for 1500lbs .

Really?!? That thing is meant for lifting 220lbs, your lights are probably 10lb. Besides, most winches have a ratcheting mechanism, preventing load from dropping, not the actual motor holding the weight up

Well, obviously I don't know anything about using a wench! lol
 
This one has wireless control. More money but convenience it is worth it.

There is an issue with using a single winch (I think).
Still in planning stage an laying out a fish room (revised about 20 times already:) )
96 x 30 x 24 with notched exterior overflow
Only front viewing panel would be seen from the family room.
So the entire tank will be in the fish room.
I was thinking about building a 96' X 30" shroud to hang the lights.
There will be a center 1 x 4 to attach the ballasts
The lighting will be two 48" quad blades with 5 Radion XR30

Now the issue....
Will the fixture is rack at an angle when the fixture is lifted?

Yes, and it may just naturally want to sit at an angle. You would want some kind of guide to keep it straight. Maybe some kind of track on the ends..
 
I would suggest spending a bit more money and using linear or linear track actuators directly or with a block and tackle pulley system built into a small frame.

Much more compact, has limit switches built in and has a much smaller footprint and easier integration. You will want to lift all 4 corners at once. If were building this i would use a single linear track actuator, stainless or resin pulleys and stainless or coated wire rope. You can build a wooden frame to mount the pulleys on or use something like 80/20 aluminum extrusions.

A pulley in each corner and a few guide pulleys to get all 4 corners attached to the pull bar that as attached tot the actuator. If you want to use a shorter actuator then you would buy one with twice the force needed and use a 1:2 block and tackle.... or 4x the force and a 4:1, etc.
