Good evening,

I am currently in the process of purchasing all the required equipment for my new set up. As far as the lighting goes I am a bit stuck. What is the best light I can get for a Fish/coral/live rock tank? I want to go LED. Any suggestions?

What type of coral are you planning on keeping? If you are planning on softies and LPS a Current USA Marine Orbit Pro wouldn't be a bad choice like mentioned above. If you want an SPS dominant tank then you can't go wrong with AI, Radion, or Kessil. The last three are definitely in the higher price range though. If you're looking for good coverage without breaking the bank I would suggest the galaxy hydro (https://www.google.com/search?q=gal...&ved=0ahUKEwit3KenldjQAhVrqlQKHdGSBBIQgTYIygQ) or something similar.

Also, if you're unsure it's always better to go bigger now than having to do it later.

thanks for the info, now that you mention it, I have to decide which coral to go with. Being new I want to go with something that wont be so high demand but still look nice.

I really like the galaxy hydro

Honestly, it's hard to go wrong in terms of making the coral happy – there are lots of great reef lights out there now – but that can make the decision a little trickier. You have to decide what other features are worth spending on (if any), and how much.

It's possible to spend $20 per square foot to light your tank, but it's also possible to spend $200+.

And they will all grow corals – you have to ask if any of these things are important, and if so, to what degree:
  • ability to suspend the light up off the tank
  • end to end light coverage
  • lack of shadows
  • sunrise/sunset dimming
  • storm/weather modes
  • extra colors
  • ease of programming
  • etc

Ha ha, I don't know if many people started out wanted to keep $300 frags of SPS, buts it's what a lot of us end up doing (or will do and they just don't know it yet ;)). It's kind of like the haircut analogy, you can always go shorter but you can't go longer. If you spend 100 on a light now that just barely meets your needs, chances are you will end up spending another 300 later when you realize you need better lighting (this applies to pretty much everything in this hoby). Always leave room for an upgrade.
