Lighting for a 20 long?

yea its fine.
Get one of these too.$13. 99 That light is powerful.

if you get the meter you can run it at 22,000 lux or appox 300 par;)

I have 7 of these on 3 tanks in the 165 watt configuration. A foot off the water and you'll be running 600 par at the surface on a 20L and 300 on the bottom at 65% I'd think. Would handle absolutely anything. Mine have been no problem for about 3 years.

I pulled the lens on 24" wide tank 30" deep and at 75% 4" off the water I get 600 par high in the tank, 250 middle bottom, 100 around the edges with
Lights every 2'.

On 18" wide tank I get about the same with 90 degree lens @55%. You will probably have the unit at 35% I'm thinking in the 12" 20L.

What do you think of this light? I know it is 31 inches long but I thought once you account for the edge of the light that doesn't have LEDs on it, it would work out perfect. It is also %65 off :p-

I just want some opinions before I pull the trigger
I have that exact same light on my 30 gallon. Modified it to run off my apex. I really like that fixture. As others have said, they are powerful, you won't need to run them very high(power wise). Mine sits about 10 - 11 inches above the surface and puts out 27,000 lux at 25% white and 30% blue

Thank you!! I think I might get it

Yes, great option but one more to consider.

I also have a 30" evo 60 watt led on a 29 gallon that would work on a 20 long. I've never measured the par on it, but I have some corals in there are doing well. Fits right on the rim with no hanging and it's cheaper @$70. Probably tough to grow Sps too fast.

No growth though whereas the Mars 300 light you could put on a 40b if you ever upgraded.

300 watt better unless you like the brackets and price!

This is one of those chinese black boxes i mentioned earlier. It's hit and miss with these although mars aqua gets 4.5 stars from amazon users there. Plan on no customer service though and if there is a small issue probably having to take care of it yourself will be your only option. As for the light itself, thats a lotta light for your tank unless u are going pure sps. I don't think u can lower the intensity of that light. If u want to go that route, i would consider the smaller 165w model and if u needed more power buy another later. Two smaller models will also allow u to upgrade your tank in the future without buying more light. But again, i would start with just one 165w and then see how that works for u. Good luck.

I have been told a lot of different things
Should I go 300 watt or 165 watt? I am not sure anymore. Again, I will only be keeping softies, LPS, and maybe a gorg.

I keep mostly LPS. I went with the 300 watt simply for the spread..it's exactly the width of my tank and provides full coverage. I don't know if the smaller footprint of the 165 will light up the ends of the tank to your satisfaction.
They are dimmable, but be aware the minimum intensity they will run at is 10%.
Also anything above 30% will kick the fans on. Stock fans are noisy, a popular mod on these is to replace the stock fans with quieter one. I have 3 very quiet fans on order or $7.00 each and am waiting delivery.
If you have a controller, they can be modified to run via 0 to 10v controller signal in about 1/2 hour....just need a control cable.

Lighting is probably the most divisive issue in reefkeeping...

You will find proponents/detractors from any solution proposed in just about any scenario...

Any of the lights mentioned will work for your immediate need... it's kind of a matter of pros/cons, and your best judgement in the tradeoffs...

The 30", 300 watt chinese - $200, coverage perfect in all areas of the tank and at whatever intensity you want, will light anything you ever want to put in the tank if you choose to move to SPS down the road or upgrade gallonage down the road, so very flexible, riskier because warranty/customer service lacking

The 16", 165 watt chinese - $100, coverage will be a bigger challenge because if you want good, even light (at least covering the sides it's not hanging over), you'll need to hang it high, and it'll always be "more light" in the middle as compared to the sides to some degree, flexible to the extent you can buy another to upgrade tanks/SPS (modular), some risk warranty, customer service

30", 60 watt - $70, cheaper, likley handle your current needs with realitvely even dispursement, cheaper, but no upgradability (SPS or bigger tank), still some risk warranty, customer service

Radion, Kessil, etc. - big dollars, big controllability and flexibility, warranty/support awesome, but you'll need multiples for the tank, modular so some upgrade flexibility (but breathtakingly expensive in my view)

It's all what's important to you and how you think you'll progress in the hobby... you don't need to be an SPS keeper to have an awesome tank for sure, but I think that may be where some are suggesting the horsepower as many reefers progress in size of tank and coral difficulty-- so we're thinking down field a bit... up to you if you think that adds value.

Keep everyone up to date how that worked for you, i think everyone and some point will be looking for a new light. Nothing can replace a fellow reefers experience. Good luck.

Thank you!! I will keep everyone updated!

It sounds like everything is falling into place. Looking forward to seeing it with some fish and corals:). Pictures soon please:D
