Lighting for Black Sun coral, ubastraea micrantha

Salty, put on a black sweatshirt, black pants with a green ball cap, and drive out to Santee or Lakeside on a 85-90 day and just stand in the sunlight all day. Or drive out there with just a pair of shorts and no sunscreen. Is my logic skewed here?

I thought the articles about symbiotic zoox explained its purpose and how some corals dont share the relationship? Am I wrong here?

Actually im not sure if those are dendros. When I zoom in looks more like macro algae.
 
Ok but in perspective of angles here, the dendros are under the rock in a shaded area. Without the flash we wouldnt see them no?

That link I posted talks about why those corals grow in the areas they do. And it has nothing to do with sunlight. I dont see black nps. Just sayin. Its not a clear enough image to say otherwise and my opinion on camera angle still stands.
 
I just bought a reg sun coral , and from my understanding moderate light is ok. The one that I learned is that they do not like detritus to settle on them. So they suggested to place them in high flow or even under a shelf so it’s upside down. So as far as lighting goes high light my be a little much just because they grow usually on vertical surfaces or under rocks in high glow regions.
 
All my black sun corals likes any spot as long as there is flow. you dont really have to spot feed them as long as you have some sort of food particles in the water; pretty easy if you dont use any forms of mechanical filtration.
 
Sun corals are found in numerous places on a natural reef. They want strong currents to bring food to them and little else. I've found them diving pretty much anywhere you could think. They tend to do best in darker areas simply because they are not out competed by other species but I've also found them right next to acropora in the brightest sunlight. Acro's grow quickly and block off the food or simply encrust over them, which is why they are more prominent where slower growing corals are found.
You can acclimate them to high lighting and they will come out when the lights are on but this needs to be learned behaviour. Basically unless they can sense food in the water, there is little point in using the energy to open your polyps. Couple this with the fact that they will likely have been starved before they make it to your tank and have low energy reserves, so they can take some tlc to get them looking the best.

So to keep them healthy, chose a spot with really strong flow where you can easily feed them. Darker areas can work better if you have higher nutrient levels as the inhibit algae.
 
I went with a purple and red acan. I didn't want a centerpiece coral that may or may not open up while I am awake.
