Im setting up a Red Sea reefer 650 and I am looking at lighting options. I have only really used T5’a before and I want to try led’s. I have a budget of about 1500 and I want to know your opinions on these lights, and suggestions about others!
I’m looking at the maxpect recurve 320watt fixture, the maxpect razor x 300 watt fixture, and 4 hydra 26’s. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Looking to do a sps reef with high flow and lots of acros!

I think you would be most happiest with the AI hydras. The Maxspect lights work well, but connecting to them via the app to make corrections or even for basic setup can be a huge pain sometimes. It sometimes takes me around 30 minutes to get my Maxspect ethereal, the ICV6 controller, and the phone app all communicating together.

Thanks! I really like the maxpect recurve idea, but I might get the hydras

Something you may notice making the switch is the look. Small emitter leds are spotlights and t5s are a blanket of light. Anti led say spot Light , anti t5 say it looks flat.
SO consider the look you want to avoid fixing shading issues later.
Multiple small fixtures can help do that. I honestly don’t reccomend 2 kessil 360 on a tank. I’d use 4-6 160s for that reason.
Consider getting a par meter. The seneye is cheap.

Check the max intensity the lights you use will give you.
IMO , the razor has always been underrated and I’m not sure why.
Maxspect has always had great specs on their lights. Plus multiple led clusters. One of our LFS Has on in a tank and it’s prettt nice. I don’t app. I set the the light and walk away. It’s slower that way. No knee jerk adjustments.

My self, I prefer large emitter arrays. It naturally covers the tank and they are larger so give even coverage. The leds give a natural shimmer. So it’s look is t5 with a stunner strip. My tanks have black boxes , big lights and I used diffusion’s and pulling lenses to actually reduce shimmer. It looks just like my metal halide fixture.

Take a poke at Orphek if you like that idea. Or consider twin something like Reefbreeder photons or SB ultras. There is no worry on shading there. Or twin razors.

I don’t know much about the recurve. It’s the most power of all your choices I belive. Looked good on the tanks I’ve seen.

Fwiw , I belive the power goes like this from low to high. Ai , razor , recurve.

Thanks! I’ll look at the recurve, it is double the cost, but I was going to get the 650 deluxe witch is $4700, the normal one is 3200$. With the recurve, it will be 4300$

If you decide to go with hydra26HD's I have 2 HMS hard mounts designed for them I am going to be selling in a few weeks once my DIY canopy is complete.

Inbox me if you decide you want the hard mounts.

I really like the recurve idea- I think that it will look the best with its wide spread and LED spotlights for sps. Anyone have any info on par for a 24” deep tank?

I have always loved that they have the specs published.

Big difference in price?

The maxspect blue is a deep blue. Btw. Not royal blue like an SB , not aqua blue like a kessil. Not sure what color a prime is.

Led layout for the ai

6 - Cree XP-G2 Cool White (> 70 CRI)
6 - Cree XT-E Royal Blue
6 - Cree XP-E2 Blue
2 - OSRAM OSLON Deep Red
2 - Cree XP-E2 Green
2 - SemiLED 415nm
2 - SemiLED 400nm

I’m leaning more towards the razor x, leaving me that extra money to put towards a new apex

Above was really for salty [emoji23]

Will follow along, the maxspect lights have a nice price point. The 36” model matches my 3 primes with what looks like on paper more coverage. How are you going to hang?

Just realize with that fixture, you will have a thin line of single LED pucks on the centerline of a 25” wide tank. From side to side, coverage will be fine, but in the fore to aft dimension, especially as SPS frags turn into colonies, you will run into shadowing issues. That is just the nature of LED fixtures using pucks and why you see so many eventually add T5 supplements. If you plan on building a wall to wall SPS tank, these are factors inherent to puck LED fixtures that you must consider and why you see many using multiple smaller puck style fixtures oriented perpendicular to the tank, with the pucks of each fixture running in the fore to aft dimension.

Thanks for the info! I was looking at the recurve to solve that very problem but it looks like it has a poor par rating
