Lighting question: PAR vs length of time lights on

So I have my t247 6" above my 20" deep 50G. Have them on 20%B and 10%W to acclimate and will bump up 5% /week to get to 60%B-30%W.

Anyway thoughts are - I was told to keep them on no more then 8 Hours / day to avoid algae growth however what is most important power of lights vs time they are on? Any thoughts on optimal setup / timing?

If you have low nutrients algae will not be promoted by your lights. I run my lights for around 10 hours.
