Hi all, I am planning a second tank, a Red Sea Reefer 525 XL which is 57.5cm d x 150cm w (22.6 x 59 inch). I currently have a RSR 250 lit by a Maxspect Razor 420R 160W assembly sitting on the tank sides using the regular arms.

In the new tank I am considering 4 options - Maxspect, Red Sea, Radion and Kessil. I plan to use mounting arms or equivalent, no hood. Hanging lights is an option. The current tank is a mixed reef and the new tank will be similar. Probably LPS and Softie dominant, but with some SPS. I am in Sydney, Australia, so don’t have all the options those in other markets have. Here is the current tank.

The Red Sea option seems straightforward - 3x Reef LED 90 units.
For Maxspect I appear to have 3 options - 420R 300W, R5 300W or R6 300W (just released, not yet available).
In the Radions the one I have looked at is the XR30 G4 Pro. The 525XL is 50” wide so I am thinking I could get away with 2 units. I’d love to hear any views on the G4 Pro vs the regular G4.
For Kessil I am quite confused as I don’t have any experience with this brand and their range is very diverse. I would love to hear any suggestions.

The tank will be Neptune APEX controlled but I am not wedded to Apex integration for the lights, happy to keep them separate as my current light is.

Appreciate any feedback you have!

Firstly great to see another Aussie here there are more and more of us :)

Secondly I've been looking into the same tank and since I'm on a budget im thinking of 3 hydra 26's but if money was no object 3 radion g4 pros

I don't have any experience with the red sea, maxspect or kessil lights so I can't vouch for them

I am very happy with my Hydra HD 26, I am using 3 of them in my RSM S-500, I would buy again them if I would set up a second tank.

Just bumping this thread.

At the moment I am leaning towards 3x Red Sea Reef LED 90 units on mounting arms. Would still love to hear any suggestions or feedback others have.

I have not had any experience with the reef led line and nether have others at my work but i know that three lights is often reccomended for the 425 up to the 625

Hello and welcome to R2R!

I have the Maxspect RazorX lighting my 525 XL. I had the Razor 420R above my prior tank.

I also have it connected to the ICV6 module for control from my iPad.

Thanks, that’s a nice looking tank.

The Maxspect is certainly an option, and my 420R does a great job on the RSR 250. I’m leaning toward the clean look of the 3 Red Sea heads on mounting arms at the moment, even though it’s less clusters than the Maxspect option. I’ll have to check on the spread more closely before I commit however.

Quick question for you. How about two Maxspect Razor in parallel or would that be too much?

I personally think it would be too much.
