I have a 55 gallon saltwater tank and would love to start getting into corals. I need a light that is strong enough for bubble tip anemones and most corals. Any suggestions?

When I first started I went with LEDs. After about 4 yrs I finally switched to a T5/LED hybrid. Corals respond soooo much better to them.

Not a hard tank to light – what do you have on it now?

Do you know if you like halides or T5's better as far as look? (one is very dramatic, dynamic and shady, the other is very homogenous, even and a bit dead-looking to some....both are good; we're talking aesthetic preference or use-case.)

On the low end, you can do a DIY like these for less than $70 that will do what you need:
That second vid is for an in-wall tank exactly your size.

I currently run a very similar one on my 38 Gallon. I used to run a double-row on my 50 Gallon before I got the 27" Razor I have on it now. ($500)

Im running flourescent compact 65 watt 50/50 right now. Nothing too good. Which would you recommend, halide or t5? Im still kinda new to this so i dont know much about lighting. I only have a budget of around 150. Anything good in that price range?

Hm.....I would seriously consider my DIY at that price. Order $70 worth of parts from eBay, screw them into a board as shown in the vid....you have to figure out the mounting since I'm not there to see ;)...and you're in business. It's extremely easy to assemble – no electrical skills needed whatsoever.

Use that until you can afford a bigger buy. It might even do you just fine until you eventually upgrade the whole tank.

I can't tell you on the preference thing....look at lots of pictures of T5 and halide tanks until you can see what the common differences between the lights are.

Thanks alot for the help. Ill order the parts tommorow

Just bite the bullet and get name brand stuff. Less fire hazards involved as well.
I too went down the same road, everyone has their opinion, but Radions settled mine.
