I'm curious. We have LED lights on a large aquarium and the water is clear and the lighting is really nice. I have a smaller tank and have T5 lights on it and it's not near as nice as the LEd tank. Are the lights that different? Even the refugium is clear on the tank with the t5 lights. If that is the case I'm going to buy LED for the smaller tank. Kinda confused here. Have done a lot of moving and cleaning on the smaller tank so I know it will take a bit to clear up. But it's about done and so not like the other tank.

It all depends on whom you ask. Many different reefers will swear by different lighting systems. Everything nowadays seems to be headed in the LED direction due to their high output, low cost to run, and longevity. Metal halide lights give off alot of heat and use alot of electricity. T5 use more energy and need to be replaced regularly to continue to put out good par for corals. However these have proven results with coral growth and color. You can also get whats called a hybred light which consists of T5 and LEDs. I myself swear by Kessil LED lights. I have two of them over my 40 breeder and have had great success so far. So it's up to you really on which lighting system you want to stick with.

There is a difference but I think your small tank is just dirty.
Overall the LED's are a cleaner light.
T5's are still a better light as it comes down to the ease of growing corals.
I think the combo of bulbs might have something to with it.
