I’m currently running a fish only tank. I’m thinking about getting into corals and wanted to know if I need to upgrade my lighting to start. I currently have an Aqueon T8 15w full spectrum 18inch on my 20 gallon high tank. Is that sufficient to start or will I have to upgrade. I’m looking to start with zoanthids and some softies any suggestions would be great.

Ok as far as lighting ..... I would get a new light. First, because LEDs are so cheap on Amazon now. Second was less energy used. Thrid way strong then that light you current have. Lastly LEDs last so much longer then a bulb and bulbs need to be replace about every 6 months in my opinion.

Agreed, I would get another light from what you have. Zoas and softies don’t require as much light that our sps needs but your light is not quite enough to have softies flourish.

It wasn't THAT many years ago that T8's were the gold standard of reef lighting. Most softie's don't require too much light. That being said, one bulb on a 20 gallon high is still pretty low. you could look into a dual T5 fixture that won't cost you too much up front, but with the cost of utilities and bulb replacement might cost more down the road. With the size of the tank, I personally would explore the LED options. Just something to think about.

All good advice I also would recommend LED for long term. Plus they add a great shimmer to your tank

Thank you guys for the response. I’ve been looking at going with the Current USA Orbit Marine IC. It seems to have decent reviews and I like that it is expandable.

Great light but you can get a better one cheap look at the watts . How many does that current have for the price ?
