Hello. I just came across a lightning clown and I have him in my tank hosting a rose bubble. It's a beautiful pair. I heard these designer clowns were very expensive. I was wondering how much $ I can get for he lightning clown. How much do they go for? And how much would it be if I sold the anemone with the lightning clown ? Thanks.

That looks like a maroon lightning and around here (MN) they go for around $400. The price has dropped from the 7-10k since they were first released.

Ultimately you could get whatever someone is willing to pay for it though...

In my area I've seen them go for around $180- $200. I was surprised at first because these were crazy expensive at one time. The price has definitely dropped in the past few years.

Yea I know they are still expensive. It would be amazing if they were still 10 k lol. But I know I can get a great deal selling the clown along with the anemone which is a tank raised anemone.

When they were selling for that high amount it was to vendors like BlueZoo, who were investing in it to breed for future returns. You can read more about it here:

I just saw the guy that started this project a few hours ago :)

Edit: I just looked on his website again and there is one that is going for 2.6k. I think it depends what spawn it came from and the patterning. I'm not entirely sure though because although I think it is interesting I have never had a desire to acquire one.

If you came across them and have them now in your tank why would you sell them again?

Was wondering the same thing and how you just "came across" one. I assumed you were asking price because the money at this time is more important than having the fish to you, but I don't necessarily need to know the answer to that :)

I call it "fishy" ;)
Never the less awesome fish, like to have myself a pair but need to get rid of the Gold Nugget breeding pair first or just set up another 60 cube in the frag room.

Let me know how much you want for golden nuggets clowns.

Salt creep your absolutely correct money is kinda more important to me now. If my fish is the certain breed that's worth thousands I would most likely sell him. He is a beautiful lightning clown. How would I know if I have the expensive type?

From who you obtained it?

It was one of my friends I met from the LFS he wanted a regular pair of clowns and sold me his lightning. I got a great deal on it! I don't think he realized that it's a very expensive fish lol

I wouldn't plan on getting thousands. Without knowing the fish's background you would be hard pressed to make a profit. I don't know what you paid, but I am guessing even with the nem you will be hard pressed to get over $300. If it was a different nem, like an inferno or Colorado Sunburst, it could be a different story. But in this hobby they say it's only worth what you want to pay, so it is possible you will find someone willing to pay a small fortune, but very doubtful IMO. I kind of think the lightning maroon hype has passed already.

This is true. Just like with coral, without lineage and some background you will have a difficult time finding someone willing to pay top dollar for it. Good luck.

ReefQueen just posted one that was on the cheaper end, here is another active WYSIWYG direct from the originator:

it's tough to say what yours is worth without knowing more about it.

I'm really not looking to sell. I was just wondering because I got this fish for 75$ which makes me think I can turn a little profit. I rather keep him anyway because it's a beautiful pair with my rose bubble. I was just curious.

And to tell you the truth reef queen I think this anemone I have is indeed the inferno anemone. It's not a regular rose bubble.
