is the higher the k better? a local petstore worker told me that if your lights are bring enough it can kill you algae and i dont have a ton of algae but it is annoying when i have to clean it all of the time.

With regards to lighting color spectrum. One may grow algae faster (6500k for one) as to 20000k wont grow it as fast as the 6500k, but algae can grow in all aquarium color spectrums.

6500k is more of a yellow, 10000k being a crisp white, 20k being a nice blue hue, 460-420nm being blue (actinics) .

Light is just of one part of the algae's needs, nutrients being the other.

Example, guy on here has a natrual sunlit reef tank, he is in the lower end of the spectrum, but does not have algae growth due to proper maintenance on the tank.

What are you keeping in the tank?

I know for sure you would like the looks of the 10k+ spectrum your fish will look better and corals will have more color.

Higher the k the bluer it is lower the k the yellower. All depends on the look you want but def don't recommend anything under 10k. Light won't kill algae it only grows it. Don't go back to that fish store. Lol jj

what lights are you currently running ?

I run China made leds (over a year) on my mixed tank and 4xT5 on my LPS dominant tank.

T5 are ATI blue +, UV 454, ATI Aquablue special, and ATI super actinic
