linckia starfish

Yours is the exception to the rule. The slow die off of the majority of Linckias indicates a nutritional issue, starvation. Even a properly collected and healthy individual will starve in tanks not long established or not large enough to meet their dietary needs. There are no hard based facts regarding what specifically they do eat and what you can give them as a substitute. Even Liveaquaria list them as difficult.

Saltwater Aquarium Starfish for Marine Reef Aquariums: Linckia Sea Star, Blue

+1
I highly suggest anyone that has or would like to have a linckia also read Bob Fenners comments and concerns on WetWebMedia. Sorry if I'm breaking any rules for post WWM.

I've had this one for 2 years. I checked and I ordered it from Blue Zoo Aquatics on 1/31/2012. Has been in 2 different tanks (upgraded.) I drip acclimated for 3 hours when switching it between tanks and when it came in. It has had some very short air exposure as well. I have never target fed it, but I feed heavily and skim heavily. My tanks have never been out of the 1.025 - 1.026 salinity range, so that probably helped. My live rock is not super-clean, either. There is plenty of red turf algae and stuff on the rocks. It moves around the whole tank all the time.

Yours looks absolutely vibrant ♡ VERY nice.

I think part of the problem with linckias is that it's just really not well-understood what they eat. Once that's really figured out, I'd bet those success statistics will improve dramatically.

@MarcWeaver beautiful Linckia.

Too bad he does not eat Pocillopora. :-)

How large is your tank, do you ever witness the starfish eating?

It's 375 gallons, and no I have never seen it eat. I HATE Pocillopora, it spawned and I have almost 100 mini-colonies. That stuff kills anything, even LPS.

Scientific progress getting you down? XD

Sorry - it just struck me as funny that we finally made enough progress to induce the rare event of...something you didn't want. XD
