When people are selling coral and they say "with lineage" what exactly does this mean? Will I get a piece of paper that proves they bought it from the original owner? Or a list of names of people who have bought and fragged down to this particular seller? Just curious as I have seen this quite often.

From my experience it just means the person you are buying it from can verify who he bought it from. It's usually verbal. Meaning if you really want proof, the guy he bought it from can directly tell you that in fact he did buy it from him. But this is usually verbal or email/pm. I've never seen anyone issue certificates.

agreed. I usually do my best to research feedback and past posting habits of the seller(usually multiple sites). If he looks legit enough I take his word for it and buy, if not, i just don't buy.

And when using this term, does it mean they have lineage back to the very first person to have this coral? And most likely, wouldn't that be some LFS or wholesaler? Or are these coral that morphed and hobbyist named them themselves, etc...?

we could just use the feedback here. simply state what you got when you leave feedback. still a bit of the honor sytem but as the chain gets longer you could still trace it back easily with dates. And since we can all read feedback people write about us we'll be able to monitor its accuracy.

Just fyi. There's also looking closely at the coral in question. If it doesn't look TO ME like the coral I'm looking for, even if the guy (who I've never met) says it is, I'm skeptical and won't buy it.

every time someone comes into the store and asks where we get this or that, i grin big and say "the ocean". cracks me up every time. never gets old! lol

Lineage= I got it from this guy who got it from that guy etc.... Bottom line is it came from the Ocean originally!
Just Say NO to lineage and outrageous coral prices!! :crossedlips:
