Lion fish question

Is there any kind of lion fish out there that can go in a 20 gallon tank?
The closest would be one of the dwarf lionfish, and even then I wouldn't put them in anything less than a 40 breeder. Unless you're using the 20 as a grow out tank for something bigger later on, I wouldn't.

Okay. No it would be permanent but I didnt quite know, I just know I've been wanting one real bad but I may just plan on upscale g to a bigger tank then.

When I upgrade to my 75 I want to keep my 40 breeder for a fuzzy dwarf lionfish. They're so cool :)

I ma

y be purchasing a 80gal now so its gonna be happening soon!! Lol will the fuzzy dwarf lions be compadable in a reef tank?
They're labeled as not reef safe, however, I have seen reef tanks with them in it. And they've done fine

The reason they list them like that, is because they will shrimp. They won't bother crabs or snails, or corals.

I think the live aquaria tank size recommendations for these guys are right on. I wouldn't put a fu manchu in less than a 40b, the other dwarfs at least a 55g, a volitan maybe a 120 even though mine seems cramped in a 210g. A big misconception that these guys don't swim that much or need swimming space. People keep them in tanks too small and they don't swim much because they are cramped, duh.

See if I got this to work. A glimpse of lions in a reef with room to roam. The pic below with the volitan in a 210g, I don't think that big boy would be happy in anything smaller. Many vendors misrepresent the tank size these guys need. One, dwarf lions have a high mortality rate, so they want to sell them fast. Two, volitans are consider so overpopulated, that I have seen lfs' getting them for $7 at the wholesaler. A quick fast buck for the lfs around here, they have no problem selling you one for your 40b.

Having lost a tank to a lion that suddenly went on an eating spell, I’d only do a tank that only had lions. Hmm, maybe that’s the next tank!!!

That's so awesome. I'm getting a 60 gallon tomorrow. What fish should I keep away from a fuzzy dwarf? Idk how big of things will fit in his mouth.

I've seen my fuzzies take down fish a bit more than a 1/3 their bodies. Wide bodied fish are generally fine, smaller more slender fish not so much. I feed my dwarf lions a live diet but I know most want to feed dead. So a smaller lion trained to dead food will become a much better tankmate.

So would bleenys and gobys be a worry?

I got mine from a friend that was having to move and tear his tank down. It had only been fed dead food when I got it. All was good for a few months and then we went on vacation for a week. I had someone feed the fish every day but for whatever reason near the end of the week it went on a eating spree. Started with the banghai cardinals then cleaned out the whole tank including a dog faced puffer. It died shortly after. That was the end of that tank...

I'm so sorry to hear that. If it are a puffer maybe it might not be the fish for me.. even though I want one so bad..

You could have more than one dwarf lionfish. You could also get away with a full grown female clown I think.

If still like to do a lion fish tank someday but for me it would only have lion fish.

Dwarf lions are not for every one, do alot more research, especially concerning feeding before you decide on one. But I'm sorry but unless you have a full grown fuzzy, which in captivity would be closer to 5", mine get close to 6" being fed a live diet. The puffer must have been about the smallest puffer I've ever seen, and I really don't think I've seen one small enough. When you hear stories like this, this is what usually happens: a larger lion right from the ocean put into a tank with fish half it's size. Sizing appropriately and knowing the max sizes of the fish as they grow, stationary fish like cardinals are asking to be slurped. A small perching goby will be slurped; but a large orange spotted blenny or a large midas blenny, not a chance if sized appropriately. Clarkii clowns go well with fuzzies and again if "sized appropriately:, a fuzzy will not take them down.

If in fact it ate a puffer (I'm not convinced), that's probably why it died. Puffers are toxic.
