Liquid magnesium

I find that the Mg crystals that I buy from the LFS doesn't dissolve all that well. In addition, I have to pay freight to get it shipped to me.

I've been wondering how liquid Mg that I can buy at the grocery store might work as a substitute? I'm talking about the stuff that is applied topically to help reduce muscle cramps.

Could I get some comments (besides "your crazy") on this.

You need to check what ingredients go through that liquid, is it pure Mg or there are some additives or other harmful chemicals. There are other companies that supply magnesium for reef tanks in liquid form, you can check them out. If it was me, I wouldn't trust something designed for human use in a reef tank.

Yes, it's extra ingredients that would worry me as well. There is nothing listed that would worry me but it's the unlisted ingredients that are worrisome.

Exactly, thats why I won't risk it, many chemicals might be used in trace amounts that won't harm us, but in reef might harm fish and inverts. Try the liquid alternative, like red sea, bright well, fluval...

My guess would be anything you buy in liquid form for human topical use won't be very concentrated either. You need to add a ton of Mg to make a noticable change in your levels. Contaminants aside, depending on the size of your tank, I bet you could likely add an entire bottle and see very minimal increase in your levels.
