Literally make it rain on your reef?

Has anyone ever dabbled in the idea or had thoughts on a way to make something that will make it “rain” on the top of the tank? I would think you could make something out of small tubing. Kind of what you see at a grocery store In the veggie dept. I figure you could used a small pump from the sump to push just this little water.

only thought of this when I saw some video about someone making a lightning storm over their tank with their lights.

To something like that you’ll want a high pressure pump and nozzles with very tiny openings to ensure it’s a mist and not big drops or streams of water. MistKing is a popular one. I had one plumbed across several vivariums when I kept dart frogs and it worked great. It ran on a regular timer that worked in seconds to water the plants and keep the humidity up in the tanks.

Sounds like a really interesting concept.
I can imagine the splashing of water would end up causing a lot of salt creep issues however!

It’s been done extensively in the advanced FW and herp hobbies. The easiest way to do it is with a canister filter and a spray bar mounted above the waterline.

You can do a Google search for ”rain chamber” for more information.

I don’t think it would accomplish anything in a reef tank beyond making a mess though...

I wouldn’t run it on the regular may once in a while. So after use just clean the spray bar.
I wouldn’t expect it to accomplish anything. Just something neat to do here and there.

id be afraid I’d spring a leak and not only taking out nearby electronics, but now your lighting system.

Power bricks and pump controllers are “cheap” to replace in the event of a “normal” leak. But now even my light fixtures are at risk! Or at least a lot higher risk!

I think the sound of the rain plops would drive me crazy. (I know I said plops instead of drops because it's the plopping sound hitting the water that would torture me lol).
