I love the info here on R2R, but I wondering if there is a/any really informative books out there explainly the different approaches to setting up reef tanks.

David

Books I read when starting the hobby years ago did not even come close to providing the amount of information that I was able to obtain through places such as R2R. Sorry, I know this doesn't really answer your question, just sharing my thoughts.

Agreed, you will find so many opinions and facts online and much more than any book. If you want to read about different approaches, just look here! The most common method people follow is the Triton method or slightly different versions. To put it simply: high flow in main tank, ~10x turnover through sump, a good sized refugium (10%+ of water volume), strong lighting, and minimal water changes via dosing the vital elements corals need.

Maybe reef2reef needs to make a book! As for approaches to setting up a tank, they all may seem very different, but in the end they all basically do the same thing. Hopefully someone has a good suggestion for you on a book, it's been a very long time since I last cracked one to do research on this hobby.

I think the great thing about all the methods, you can combine aspects to make a system that works for you.

As far as books, mine are all quite dated in methods. One has under gravel filter setup, another the berlin method is the newest option.

Online has much more info and usually is free.

I like the idea of R2R making a book.
Or even better yet, what about a monthly, highly detailed newsletter letting everyone know the old and current methods along with research being done to help progress the hobby.
Yeah, I know it's all here already if you just look it up. I'm kinda old in a sense that I would prefer reading via analog some of time.
This site is a complete treasure for the hobby, but I would definately subscribe to a news letter. Just saying... hint/hint

I have the amazon unlimited for books on kindle (I use the app). When I decided to do this, I downloaded my 10 at a time books, read them, then got 10 more until I'd exhausted the unlimited source. I also hit google, which is how I found R2R. That gave me at least some knowledge to begine. I also decided to go an AIO tank so I could get the feel and experience of a saltwater; before diving into various pros and cons of equipment. Even if R2R had a book, I'd still suggest to someone new to do what I did with the unlimited with Kindle. Well worth the 10 bucks a month for any non fiction reading.

Just don’t be fooled that because it’s in a book, it must be true. Be almost as skeptical of them as internet sources.
