Little board Show me the Tangs!!

At the LFS a while back and a yellow tang jumped $400 overnight! Glad you are coming back to the hobby I have had my first saltwater fish for 2weeks and 1day so far
Yeah, I watched a YT that had been at my LFS for £30 and then the next week I went it was for £500. I was in shock as I was close to purchasing it too.

i love the powder browns but my first tang ever and all time favorite is the yellow tang , iam coming back to the hobby in few weeks and just learned about the ban on yellow tangs :(
I love the powder browns but prefer achilles and goldrim hybrids.

Lets keep those tangs coming!

Here's a one inch tang I hand netted while snorkeling off of NYC a few summers ago, its a Acanthurus chirurgus, unfortunately a mantis shrimp I also took home that day, ate it. I haven't been able to catch another one since.

When I left the hobby in 2015 Gem Tangs were hard to come by and priced out of reach for most hobbyist. Now look at us.

I remember when gem tangs were closing on 2K… now they’re sat around 300-500. Next thing you’ll know, Gems will be just like the Yellows were and the yellows will be the same pricing as a Gem used to be.

I forget what exactly sparked my interest in a Gem Tang but I think it was this video. I didn't even know they existed before this. Somewhere in a 1990s copy of FAMA is an article on them too.

I wish I could find a decent sized yellow. I lost both of mine to velvet several months back and miss that bright yellow in the tank. I have larger fish so the little captive bred ones won't work. 20220819_211640.jpg

Hopefully the Hawaii ban will be lifted soon.

If you use an acclimation box and don’t mind about really fleshy LPS then a good alternative could be a pair of “Big Longnose” Butterflyfish - Forcipiger longirostris.

You can also wait for a large Yellow Tang to emerge from Indonesia (These fish aren’t endemic to Hawaii!).
