I think you may want to spend some time thinking about the flow rate you want (most sources recommend turning over the volume of the tank 20 to 50 times an hour). Then you need to think about the vertical and horizontal distance of the pump from your tank and calculate the head pressure (tubing of 1" or less will reduce flow and increase head pressure a bit, so you may need to factor that in if you have a significant distance involved, let's say more than 6 feet). All pumps should come with a head pressure rating and will have a trade off between flow rate and the actual head pressure of a given application. Flex line works as well as PVC, although over long runs, PVC will have less resistance (e.g. head pressure).
