Live rock boiled

I’ve also been reluctant to say this but my brother got a Scopas tang and the only lfs I have is petco and they won’t take it. Any ideas on what I can do. I haven’t seen any signs of stress but I hate to have it in a small tank

Sounds like a phosphate issue, try a bag of chemipure elite.

Chemipure elite has such an insignificant amount of GFO in it, that it's not very useful in reducing phosphates when there are ongoing problems. It would be much more cost effective to use a dedicate phosphated media like GFO in a filter bag.

Chemipure elite can be used to manage phosphate issues once everything is under control.

I just turned on my lights and the cloudiness is almost completely gone and algae is goin away. I’ll update later once the lights have been on longer

That stuff is magic, I swear by it.

Agree boiling live rock is a bad idea. It can even be dangerous to your health. Bleaching live rock is very easy and does a great job of getting rid of any unwanted pests or algae’s on live rock.

I know my family didn’t tell me they were doing it. Lucky I never had Zoas or ploys in the tank. I was so mad when I heard about it

If your family would like, they are more than welcome to clean my tank. ;Joyful

See if you have a local reef club. You can try to give it away there. You can also post the tang up on Craigslist. Just ask about the persons set up before giving it to them.

Sounds like you need to have a conversation with your brother about what he can do with the tank.

Trust me you don’t want them too. When they did a water change before I got home the salinity was 1.016 and they killed every thing I had except the clown, tang, and a maxi mini carpet anemone. I’m still shocked that they survived

I’m in an area where saltwater tanks are popular. I would have to drive 2 hours to Seattle for any good lfs but I’ll try craigslist

If you post him for free on the FB reef group or Craigslist someone might be willing to make the drive.

When I was graduating from college, in the middle of cornfields, I had to sell off my livestock. While I did have a LFS that took some stuff, I found the local reef club was excellent. I sold some and gave away for free the remainder. Got everything sold off from two tanks rather quickly. Met some really great people through that club too. I had gotten a lot of equipment and rock through it before.
