When I get my rock in there may or may not be someone staying in the room the tank is. My question is if the rock's in the tank how badly will it smell? Will it even be noticeable in 30 gallons of water? Should I cure the rock in the garage and then add it to the tank, or will this hinder the cycle? Thanks!

What type of rock and where is it coming from?

what is the smell? does it smell like sulfur?
what type of rock are we talking about? a little more info would be great as well as pics of the cycling system

yes, more information would be helpful. If it's uncured live rock then the smell can get pretty bad. There's usually a good bit of die off which adds to the stinkiness. I started my first reef with uncured marshall island rock and it was awful for the first week or so - the tank was in the basement so it was ok but I wouldn't have wanted to sleep by it. If it's cured live rock or dry rock, smell shouldn't be an issue.

Well like I said I haven't yet ordered it, I guess I was just asking about LR in general and if there's any rock that's not too odious to sleep by while curing. Tanks a 34 gallon solana and I have a jebao rw-4 and a koralia pump (the smallest one). Aquaclear 70 which I have empty for now. Not sure if I should run the skimmer while curing live rock? I'm probably going with 44 lbs premium fiji from liveaquaria, as it says it's precured.

Na, its not bad at all, small fishy smell, if anything it smells like the ocean on the room.

If your worried about it just cure it in a brute trash can in your garage with a heater and powerhead.

Ok so if I cure it in a trashcan the cycle won't take any longer once it's ready for the tank then?

Right, once its done, get water in the tank, and put the rock in, and your all set.

Alright well that's good news. If the rock does smell bad I'll have a trashcan ready, if not it'll go straight in the tank.
