Hi,

I bought a RS Reefer 450 (used) right before Thanksgiving knowing I wouldn't be able to setup until the new year after moving into a new home. With the tank I got some of the live rock which has been in a box in my garage since then.

Finally ready to set everything up. Do I need to do anything with the rock first? Do I have to cure it first or can I put it right in tank?

I have some rock/sand from my current JBJ45 setup that I may use as well but I just bought some new Tropic Eden Reef Flakes sand to use instead so I may end up just starting fresh with all new rock as well if I have to go through a long curing process.

Thanks

You could start with new rock, but the process will be longer than what you already have (assuming you buy dry rock). There are still bacteria alive in the rock even though it has been in a box for a while. I would rinse the rocks very well with DI water and remove any dead or loose debris. Put it in the tank....I'm betting you'll be surprised how quickly everything cycles, especially if you seed the system with live sand/rock from another tank.

Perfect. I was just trying to avoid having to cure rock for a month or two.

thanks

One thing is for Sure in this hobby .. pataince is everything ...!!!!

Yes 4 sure... part of my problem was that during the move my current tank now has a leak so I have rock and corals in a rubbermaid tub, fish in a 10g QT and sand in buckets.

So need to get things going a little quicker than I had planned.

You could always seed with Brightwell Microbacter 7 or Seachem Stability.
