A friend has offered me 100 lbs of live rock that she got after buying a tank from someone off CL. I have very little knowledge of how the tank was maintained and am always hesitant of introducing hitch hikers or copper leaching rocks. Would you ever tank live rock from someone in this scenario? If there anything I can do to treat the rock (acid wash, ect)? Do I just decline and keep cycling my dry rock and buy some additional rock later if needed?

Upgrading to a 40B shortly so I will need to get my hands on some at some point.

If you have a QT you could put it in there for now and see how it works out..I don’t recommend bleaching it etc..those are harsh chemicals you can also get a Rubbermaid bin or a trash can and put saltwater in there and let it seed for a while...I don’t have much experience with getting LR from a unknown source to be honest

I did end up getting one piece from a guy that donated some to my LFS my husband put it direct in our tank, but that was a luck shot it’s one of the best quality LR we have it’s spreading some beautiful Coralline Algae

I'd cook the rock à la Marc Levenson, and in addition, test the water for copper.

I would pick it up and setup a Rubbermaid tub for it. Keep an eye out for hitchhikers you may not want. You'll be able to test for copper and phosphates as well to see if it's leaching anything undesirable.

Well I got some good news. Not only does she has 100lb of live rock but 2 berlin protein skimmers, 4 power heads, probably a dozen types of reef additives and several return pumps... I feel like I hit the jackpot trading it for 40 cichlid fry.

Also, thanks for the tips! I will isolate it for a while as I am in no rush.
