So I just upgraded from a 60 cube to a 75 gallon long tank. Build thread here:

75 Gallon Upgrade

I had a very large chunk of live rock that was in my old tank for the past year that I didn't have room for. It's been sitting in a bucket on my deck since Sunday pretty much. I got to thinking I could really use a couple of smaller pieces I could break off of it. My question is what do I need to do to be able to use this rock now? A full cure? I'm sure everything is dead off it or don't want to risk putting dead stuff into my tank. I'm not sure if that would even be a big problem? I had a buddy who is a big reefer and he told me to just break off what I want and put it in the sump for a few days before putting in DT? Advice wanted! Thank you!!!

yea Id clean the heck out of it..vinegar, peroxide and stick it back in the bucket with a powerhead and old tank water.

I've been tinkering with the new tank a lot and just getting to point where I'm going to break up that rock and clean it. Can you give me more specifics on how you would do it? I've never done it before. Just put vinegar and peroxide in bucket with rocks and tap water to start ? How long would you soak it? Then run in old tank water with powerhead for how long to flush it out? Thanks again!

I do a 5 g water change. split the water into two buckets. Add just under a 10 to 1 peroxide, and then dust dip and scrub. then rinse in the non peroxide water. You can add a half a bucket of rodi in the middle to rinse if you like.

The only odd problem I had once on a BIG deep clean(and maybe too much peroxide) was I had odd ph issues for a day or so. So I don't soak and rinse well if its going right back in the tank with corals.

Sweet thanks for the advice!

You bet!
Do use caution if its been awhile since you've moved stuff around. Don't wanna stir up too much muck. I keep a bottle of bacteria close.

Ok yeah for sure thanks! I'm only going to be using a fairly small piece of this rock I clean to put a few zoa frags on. I did all the stirring up when I tore down my cube to set this one up. Lol. I did add a bottle of bacteria to the new tank just to be safe but over a week in and no ammonia has registered at all. I've been checking it daily so I think I'm good. I kept all my rocks and corals in totes with heaters and pumps for the 24 hours it took me to do the swap. So I don't think I had much die off. Thankfully I lost a birdsnest coral and that's it. Everything else looked real happy shortly after the transfer. I just had this one big chunk of rock I didn't need so I left it sitting in a bucket since last Sunday. Got to thinking I could definitely use a piece of it for my zoa frags which brought me to the question about how to make sure it was ok to put back in since it has been sitting.
